6 speed transmission removal question
6 speed transmission removal question
i was wondering if the transmission will have trouble clearing the rearward subframe? i read the tranny removal instruction but didnt see anythign on there about it. how heavy is it by the way??
If your not pulling the motor and just dropping the trans, it will clear. It's a B**** to get it back in though. FOR SURE a two man job. You have to twist it and make it just right to clear the subframe putting it back in and if you don't have a trans jack, i suggest getting one. It's pretty heavy so be prepared when dropping/lifting it. When i put the trans in i had someone lift it on to my chest from the top and i pushed and the other guy pulled. (Not the safest way) lol
6spd 5.5 gen trans removal is not bad at all.
ive done it alone a few times, its possibly if you know what your doing.
I lower the engine a little and the trans clears the frame perfectly. no issues.

from what I can see if I remove the thermostat/housing the engine will be able to tilt more. I'm jot realy worried about the weight I'm just worried about it clearing. im going to have one of my friends and ill be laying down lots of folded carpet incase we drop it.
dont remove the thermostat housing, your making more work for yourself.
you dont have to "DROP" the trans out, itll slide out once the clears the frame.
edit, i guess i should list out the steps needed lol
i was already planning to remove it to put in a new one. my car wasnt getting warm at all on the realy cold nights last month.
money is real tight right now. just finished rebuilding the motor in my crx wich i finally have running and have to get a tag for tomorow. i had baught the max so i could take my time with the crx but with my luck the clutch went out on the max 3 weeks after i got it. than i started seeing oil leaks on it the morning after i got it towed...
I don't know how stable that would be. I just use a block of wood between the jack and the oil pan (this is where the FSM says you should support it). Just be careful and avoid the drain plug.
As others have said, it's much easier if you unbolt the subframe from the chassis as you can support the engine with a jack and once the tranny mount is unbolted you can tilt the engine/trans down at an angle so that you have clearance to slip it out. Getting it out is a lot easier than getting it back on. I find it easiest to get back on if you ease it up/in with the end of the transmission slightly to the right. The 6 speed weighs 123 pounds per Nissan specs.
I got it out and it was simple.
With the thermostat/housing off the motor was able to tilt a good amount safely. Alternator pully is the only one that touches the body if you lower it too much.
I kept the engine subframe on. My jack has a wide plate and fits perfectly under subframe.
It slides off easy with the differential end pointed down.
