2000 Maxima Carbon Fiber hood

I'm thinking about getting a carbon fiber hood for my car, and I found one on Ebay, I wanted to know if people thought this would be a good deal?

Thank you,

Charlie

Any reason why?

I've seen and heard too many horror stories with them ...

I wouldn't skimp on price/quality.

Not if your car looks like your sig...investing in cf for performance is the last mods you should be doing performance wise. you only drop like what 35lbs or something? and you HAVE to buy hood pins and install them it is not an option not to do so. So expect to pay another $50 for pins + install

If just for looks I think it will look bad on your car. On a riced out maxima sure it is to be expected.

I own a cf hood fwiw.

I was trying to seem semi-politically correct, but that was my thought exactly.

CF trunks are even worse, something like 7#'s.

Honestly, I was just trying to replace the stock chipped, and scratched hood that I have now, and figured carbon fiber would be cheaper than a stock hood. Or am I wrong about this?

Why not just have your hood repainted?

because that would actually make sense...haha

Repainting the OEM hood is going to come out a lot cheaper than buying the CF hood....

I didn't know that, I was always under the impression that a gallon of black paint was $250, and I would then have to pay someone to spray it. Would it really be cheaper in the end?

Not to mention the cost of the clear coat. This is why I thought CF would be cheaper, and I can install it myself, so that would save a few bucks.

I paid $300 to have a spoiler sprayed, I don't think my hood is going to be cheaper.

Call around?

I have had a lip repaired, sprayed, and installed for $250. Would have been $200 without the repair, same size as a spoiler...my whole roof was quoted at $350 and that is alot more work/paint.

This. It can look good on a green car, one of the only colors that can pull CF hood off, IMO.

But you need to pay $500+, plus the cost of hood pins to get a half decent hood. Plus install if you cant do it yourself.

This.

This. The generic cost for a 1 or a few off-car pieces is $300. The hood and the spoiler would cost the same. It costs $300 because the guy has to get the same paint (initial cost), one time-use supplies for painting that color, cleaning the gun out after that color, prep/clean up work, etc.

The amount of paint, items, size isn't that important actually. This is why it might cost $300 to paint a hood AND trunk, and also cost $300 just to paint a spoiler or front lip (if painted SEPARATELY at SEPARATE TIMES).

It's all about prep and labor. A spoiler has to be painted on all sides and is 3 dimensional, a hood is practically two dimensional..all they're going to paint is the top of the hood unless you're willing to dish out the extra unnecessary coin to paint the bottom too.

$300-$350 sounds about right for a quality job. As mentioned, call around.

You can take off your OEM hood, and re-install it too. No matter how you slice or dice it, painting it will come out cheaper, look better on your ride, and is the way to go IMO.

Exactly.

You can get it painted even cheaper at Maaco or some crap shop but I wouldn't recommend it.

I read in a thread from back in 2009, that if you were gonna get a CF hood, VIS was the company to go with. Has that changed?

My Vis CF hood has lasted over 4 years and taken a good deal of abuse. It is also painted, not that that really matters.

They use crap paint, that's why. It's no where near the same quality as OEM or other paints that good body shops use.

Yeah, but for that price, I think its worth it. Hell, it can't look much worse than my scratched, chipped/faded paint does right now, or can it? LOL.

They use enamel, not base/clear coat. Yes, after some time it will look worse.

Do it right the first time.

I'm probably only gonna have this car another year, so it might actually be worth it.

Oh I would stick with just the same shade of black that I have now. Nothing fancy.

They do a **** job unless you prep it yourself so they say.

Even then will probably over spray.

I would avoid them and use a reputable body shop.

Yeah they're terrible at prepping and overspraying. Ever been behind a car in traffic and see the muffler and other things under it that got painted? You get what you pay for.

If you're going to sell it, i wouldn't bother. I'd just get a good detail and have it buffed and polished.

I have seen many over sprayed maaco cars. one comes to mind and it looked like they forgot to tape one entire side of a car's moldings.

at the end of the day good shop and don't overpay. call around and get quotes. they can very alot.

I was out late last night doing some drinking, and when I got home, I backed into that wall that you see in my signature pic. I didn't dent the bumper, but I scrapped some of the paint off of it. Good thing I plan on repainting the car.

The money you were going to spend on a CF hood or paint should be saved for your future DUI fine.

Just Bud Lights on tap, I wasn't even really drunk, I just suck at parallel parking. I don't usually have to, but by the time I got home, my neighbors were already parked, so I had no choice.

It helps when your father in law is a police officer.

Also, I highly doubt four beers in three hours really counts as being wasted, especially when you weigh 275. So maybe get all the facts before you open your mouth.
