P0051 Heated Oxygen Sensor Heater (Bank 2 - Sensor 1) Upstream

So I gathered information on this individual code as much as I could which is not much. Most of it was about the O2 Sensors in general as a whole etc.

Name: O2sensorsedit9.jpg
Views: 65404
Size: 113.3 KB
http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...on-issues.html

What I know is that the front 2 O2 Sensors (upstream) are the ones that effect fuel economy (air fuel ratio), and that they are worth replacing after 100k miles as a maintenance item to some people. With that said, if I have this code and I need to replace it. Would you just replace both front O2 Sensors for the simplicity of keeping maintenance up to date to the fullest? (Bank 1 Sensor 1 + Bank 2 Sensor 1) Or is does the cost not justify replacing both? You would think these original O2 sensors with 150k miles on them both could use a replacement regardless of throwing codes.

-Do you guys prefer OEM when replacing 02 Sensors?
-Can I replace the Bank 2 Sensor 1 myself? It looks extremely accesible. If so any how to's?
-If I replace these O2 sensors, will it be an issue later if I need to replace the precats? or is it just literally a plug and play kind of thing with the sensors and the bung holes on the precats?

I got this code during the time while punching it up a decent hill. Recognized it right away and took note when it happened.

decent threads I found in my searches

Its all plug and play, or you can buy the "universal" sensors that you cut/solder the wires yourself and usually save like $50. Either way if you need to replace the cats you can just take the sensors out and put them back in. They are all easily accessible and easy to change unless rusted in their so yeah, do it yourself.

If you have 150k on the sensors you might as well replace both. O2 sensors are one of the sensors that are subject to drift, which is the sensor becoming more and more wrong without the computer knowing, usually because of fouling, element wear(?), etc so if you have 150k on the stock sensor its likely not real accurate anyway. I dont know how far the sensor can drift before the ECU notices something is up, but basically it drives the ECU to unknowingly target richer or leaner AFRs since the sensor is more or less lying about the reading

Pick up some Pb blaster and spray the 02 sensor nut about a day or 2 before you plan on replacing then it will make your life a lot easier.

I bought both front o2 sensors a few weeks back to replace though i'm not throwing a code, but at 165k its time...I'll be damned if b2s1 slow response code came up yesterday! guess i'm installing them soon

thanks all, probably will replace both with OEM... if I have to guess OEM is the way to go on these, didn't find many debates over OEM or aftermarket O2 sesnors.
and I will be sure to spray pb blaster a cpl days ahead thanks.

OEM or NGK are both good. OEM is super pricey though

Just get Bosch or something similar to that. I might avoid the lowest of low cost sensors but bosch is OEM on a ridiculous number of cars out there and the price for bosch universal is pretty cheap

is OEM worth it ??? or does Bosch last just as long?? edit: OEM vs Bosch is around $40 difference x2 $80 ! but if OEM is more long lasting I would rather go that route.

I dont know what OEM is, but they are probably either Bosch or NGK. You arent going to get a better sensor from the dealer just because its from the dealer, the sensor they are giving you is still made by Bosch or NGK

Do you have a link to the parts you are looking at? Whether it has the connector attached or if its universal (wire yourself) makes a big difference

get the one with the connector attached...plug and play that baby

iirc all 3 of mine (99 FED spec, 2 upstream, one down) were under 100 bucks shipped, rockauto.com. I think I got Bosch or NTK...

*(NTK is the same as NGK)

thanks guys, I will post what I get once I figure it out, I will prolly go with Bosch,

somethings OEM is the only way to go, but based one what you guys have said twice now, I don't feel that applies to O2 sensors.
