This.

My 3.5 has had many more issues in less time then my multiple VQ30s. Many blown MAFs, drinks oil to the point I don't know what to do with it, ball joints, more axels than I should have had to go through, the list goes on.

My 03 has gone through one MAF (90k) in 130k and 10 years of service, no other issues. Been solid as my 95.

Heard the horror stories of MAF's/pre cats/coils, etc from 2000-01 owners, no thank you.

my 02 doesnt have an IACV that is well known for taking down ECUs with it.

in general you are only comparing the engines since the body and suspension for the most part are identical. The only common 3.5 problem I have heard of is oil consumption and if you just check your oil like youre supposed to it isnt really a problem. The 3.0 once it has blown up the coils and had them replaced with the updated ones should be pretty reliable too so long as you dont end up with an IACV and ECU problem.

Well 2000 being the first model of the generation always includes problems that the later models didn't have. But then the 2003 had problems that Nissan thought would improve the car.. So I guess it depends on the person. I'm happy with my 2001.

fwiw I would probably still buy an 03 vs a 2000. Price is about the same and an 03 is newer, should have less miles, slightly better overall imo. But I do my own maintenance and am used to putting in oil now.

I have owned my 2002 for several years. The problems have been minimal. One coil, alternator, struts, brakes, seized rear calipers, valve cover/gasket and I burn some oil.

I got my gf a Passat and sold it one year later. After we sold it she wanted a Honda. While searching for a car we shared just my Maxima.....Long story short, I recently got a 2003 Majestic Blue. I vote 5.5 gen all day.

I own both... both are just fine as long as you maintain them and replace the parts that are broken.

Even if you had 2 brand new 5 and 5.5 's and said which is going to last longer.... unless both were driven by twins and followed each other around, its all about how the car was maintained and taken care of previous. Yes one engine has problems with VIAS and other has problems with MAF's.... but not all... So, long story short, dont buy a POS and fix and maintain your car and you wont have to complain about issues and hear people on the forum flame you because of it.
