2000 infiniti i30
2000 infiniti i30
i have a 2000 infiniti i30 with 110k miles on it and its been making a grinding sound when i hit about 1500-2000 rpms. i cant really explain the sound but it sounds as if theres something spinning and its hitting metal. any ideas? its the most frustrating thing to hear and i tried changing my oil and it still makes the sound please help
Thats the problem id know exactly where its coming from. It sounds like the passengers side so i was thinking an exhaust issue. Its does it when the cars not warmed up all the way and usually stops when it is but lately it hasnt stopping
Lots of parts and things can cause noises. You need to somewhat pinpoint the location and how it does it.
Jack the car up spin each wheel see if its a brake dust shield.
Start the car and rev it in park, does it do it then? How about when you power brake it? (E-Brake on, Vehicle in Drive, one foot on gas pedal, the other foot firmly applied on brake)
Does it do it when turing?
A/C on/off?
Possible cracked or loose heatshield?

I'm placing my money on exhaust heat shield -- especially if it happens based on engine RPM and not vehicle speed, gear engaged, etc. I think its called "Sonic resonance" but I could be wrong.
One way you can test is have the car running, open the doors and SLOWLY advance the RPM until the noise happens. Have a friend run around the car and determine where its coming from.
