Recently did my plugs and v/c gaskets recently and always run 93 and I am the only one who puts the gas in my car and use Mobil fuel.

Recently I keep getting a pinging noise as if there is cheap gas in the system between 2500-3200 rpms. My next option is to do the knock sensor maybe it will cure the issue? Car has 110k on it

Has anyone else run into this before? I scanned it with my scan tool but there are no codes or pending codes. Any help would be greatful

Thank you

Also I used the oem plugs from Nissan and double checked all the gaps on them before I installed them

Engine pinging

I had an issue with pinging and my Mass Air Flow sensor. Although I cant be 100% sure this is the cure because the hot summer weather is gone.

First, try spraying it clean with crc sensor clean. Search forum for how to. Just take it out, (torx screws) and spray through the air channels. Replace without resetting ecu (in order to test the sensor). I noticed immediate throttle response improvements and no ping. Although it was temporary but spraying and even soaking brought it back to life. I figured the sensor was nearly dead.

The maf for the 2003 is expensive, like $300 plus. Here is some risky advice. Maybe others can verify. I think because of issues with the 2001 MAF, they updated to the newer version. I got a 2001 MAF on rock auto delivered for 80$. Check the pictures for the thermal-resistor on the side, 5 pins and mine said it was updated as per tsb. It would be a shame if you received at non-updated 2001 MAF because they don't have the resistor on the side for air temp.

Pinging is gone and the car runs noticeably better. I should also add that I believe my MAF was destroyed by me over oiling my knn filter. But from what I have read the sensors are heated after turning off car, in order to burn off any residue. I would expect they have a limited life expectancy. Good luck!

Also, search sea foam.

I am not so lucky. My other cars are a ford pick-up and an old accord

I have a good feeling its your maf and its an easy place to start. Like I mentioned I over oiled my KNN and started hearing the ping at light loads same rpm as you. Saw oil residue on MAF so spray cleaned and presto. Unfortunately, after driving a few days the oil got sucked back in and it started to knock. I could see tiny drops of oil again on the maf. I took apart everything and wiped and sprayed it clean. Back to normal. Just for fun I recently bought that 2001 MAF for my 2003 like I mentioned and there's no doubt its running like a new machine.

I have fixed so many problems with this goldmine site. And I can't stand any amount of knocking. I have read this generation is prone to it so I only use 94.

Sucking half a bottle of sea foam in your intake may be the next best bet. I was amazed at how little of a smoke show it caused compared to other beaters I've done. Let me know how it goes! I am interested to know if it works or what it is that does work for you. I have 160kms and am yet to do the coil packs or knock sensor, which may be the next route.

lol you said kock sensor

On a serious note, have you tried checking the resistance since its not throwing any codes?

Pinging sound

Try to install an oil catcher. I have 2002 Nissan Maxima SE and installed this catcher
http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS+Performan...52205/10002/-1

You need to buy two 1 foot long 3/8 PCV rubber tubing SAE 30R7 . Avoid fuel or transmission tubing (collapses at high vacuum): I bought mine at advanced autoparts
Attached the end of the tubing to the pcv valve to IN of the oil catcher, Out of the oil catcher to the intake manifold.
This catcher helps alot, by preventing the blow by oil from the engine thru the pcv valve going to the intake manifold.

Thanks for the link. Sounds like good preventative maintenance for the vq. I wonder if members with this upgrade experience ping over long term. My engine burns oil so it makes sense. I am guessing the intake needs to come off? I think I will do this and check my coil packs at the same time. Where did you mount it?

Oil Catcher

I used 1 foot long of 3/8 PCV Tubing with a slender oil catcher by jeg, hang it between the power steering fluid reservoir and aircondition aluminum tubing. Its better to use a 90 degree elbow fitting.

Good Luck.

Thanks again.

This used to be on my to do list and I am glad you brought it up.

I read that oil in the gas reduces octane levels which I am sure is no good for ping
