Advance timing 2001 Maxima

So I finally got my car gauge pro to work. Took 2 of the elm dongles. But what ever, I advanced my timing +2, and all I have to say is WOW. The throttle response was like night and day for some reason it felt so much more responsive and takes off a lot easier. I also drove it to and from work on the highway, and feels like the car runs smoother, like no hesitation at all. All I'm saying is, get this done to your max, you won't regret it.
I live in NJ by NYC so if anyone wants I can actually do it for you for free instead of going to the dealership and paying 120$

Oddly, this is the first I've heard of this. Is there a DIY or sticky for this? I can't seem to find one.

Yea there are several, but if you have a android phone or tablet or something you can download car gauge pro, only $6 and get a little elm 327 and you can do it. Plus you can idle relearn, check all codes, test plugs, cylinders. It's honestly worth the money

I don't get it.... wouldn't fuel economy be worse, not better, after a timing advance?

Better throttle response = easier to move your car = less gas wasted getting to desired speed

No proof. In fact it's better documented on the 3.5L, quantitatively.

Cool thanks yeah I see what you mean, I guess I was guessing that better throttle response = more fuel into the engine = worse fuel economy

I also ask because I advanced the timing +2 on my '01 and my MPG averages between 19 and 20.5 (at best during summer it's 21). Of course this could be for many reasons.... but unfortunately I didn't do the math prior to the timing advance so I have nothing to compare with.

not a single con about it, its all positive!! They say the 3.0's get more noticeable power then the 3.5's.

Alot of people say you need to run 91-93 Octane. Is this true, if so why?

I'm not completely sure, but I run 93 on my car regardless, i feel a power loss and fuel mileage loss if I run regular

In very basic terms, higher octane = less prone to spark knock, which is desirable because higher timing value = more prone to spark knock.

Question, exactly what type of tool is needed for this to happen. I'm in Maryland and so far it seems every mechanic I've called are strongly against it, or haven't got a clue of what i'm saying.... "Hey would you guys be able to advance my timing from 15 to 17 degrees?" That's what I've been asking.

Alright well.. I got the elm in the mail, downloaded gar guage pro. Then I connected my dingle to my phone, though it doesn't want to stay connected. I think that is the issue. It'll pair with my device but it won't stay connected. I've tried every possible combination of connection I can think of

Had this same problem, my best guess is that I've bought the wrong elm device...

I used one of these obd things with torque and it says timing is at 16 advance does that mean you guys are setting it at 18?? and is this only done in car gauge pro the one you have to pay for?

Am I the only one that gets poor result? Changing my timing either way (advancing or retarding) seems to make my mpg go two or three down.

ok...I don't get it. how the heck to you actually change the timing? all I see is how to add the pid gauges. looks like my timing is ~15* at idle.
