Transmission or clutch problem?

I have an '02 6 speed SE. Lately while engaged in a gear, I will step on the gas and the car has somehow slipped into neutral. The stick is still in the right gear, but there's no power. It's as if it slipped out of gear. Then after a few seconds it re-engages and is fine.

I'm really worried it's the transmission. Lately my car is totally falling apart (155k miles) and it might be time to move on, as sad as that makes me. Just looking for some opinions, as I know a mechanic would say he'd have to take apart the tranny to find out for sure.

Do you pull it out of gear and back in and it goes? Or do you just leave it alone and it finally takes off?

If your having to mess with the shifter, I would check the linkage first

I just leave it alone and it re-engages and starts going. It only lasts a few seconds at a time. I don't touch the shifter.
