Speed Sensor Replacement

Does anyone know where to find the speed sensor on a 2000 GLE? I can't find it!

The 2000 and 2001 use a speed sensor, called VSS for Vehicle Speed Sensor and also called revolution sensor, in the transmission.

It is on the driver's side of the transmission. It is probably easiest to remove the left front wheel and go in through the wheel well. Where the axle goes into the transmission, look in the 1 o'clock direction.

In this parts drawing, look at the top right corner at reference # 31935.

Could he possibly be referring to the speedometer pinion on the top of the tranny close to the firewall (have to remove the airbox to get to it). I don't think all 2000's have this sensor but mine does in addition to the VSS.
