01 Max 5-speed

Hey Yall, I have a question regarding a 01 Maxima 3.0. Car runs great but wanted to know if there's something I can "adjust". All my previous Maximas would "top out" around 154 mph. This one seems to go NO faster than 120 mph.

Everything is still currently stock, but then, so were the others. Any idea why this car doesn't want to go any faster than 120 mph? I was told that I could put it on a Dyno & see if it could be determined after that. Low miles *(92k) & all filters/belts/tuneup/hell you name it, was probably replaced.

I don't want to buy the 1st "performance chip" I see on the net for sale, because honestly, I don't know if that is even necessary. I thought that maybe my engine was pre-set at the factory to not exceed that speed. Anything like a "Rev-Limiter" a possibility?

Thanks for any help & getting this car to reach it's FULL potential!!

My maxima also tops out at 120 sadly. I was told that it is the rev-limiter, or the "governor" some call it. I don't know exactly how to turn it off tho...

Maximas going 154mph? I love how people claim all these speeds, obviously without ever testing it out. The fastest Maxima, which is a 5.5gen 6MT is still drag limited at 145 in stock form buddy. And if you had any other Maxima besides that, you'd be lucky to hit 120-130 I also remember some older gen 5MT's maxing out at under 140 so like 137 mph or so.

That said, the 5.5 gen 6MT can get over 150 with some serious mods, but yeah...

Depending on what Maxima you have, depends on where your speed governor is.

5th gen GXE/GLE all had limiters around 120 and you can feel the cut off so you'd know. Infiniti I30 versions were same, limited at 120. Only 5th gen SE's without governors were the 5MT, and the 4AT with 17" wheels, including all 20th anniversary editions. Those were drag limited at 143 mph.

Even 5.5gen Autos are limited around 130, so yeah not many stock Maximas out there that can get past 120-130 like I said.

I hope you don't go testing this out on public roads

D.Stillwell gave you the full historical breakdown. I gather that you own a Maxima GXE 5-speed? Then you need to go to a junkyard like car-part.com and look for the ECU from a 5-speed SE to replace yours.

Also bear in mind that the analog gages aren't very accurate, especially at high speeds. For example, the redline for our cars is 6500 rpm. If you redline it by looking at the tach, you are really redlining at 6100 rpm.
