2000 no check engine light bulb??

2000 no check engine light bulb??
Looking to buy a 2000...they say the car has no check engine bulb either being pulled out by prior owner or being burnt out...wondering if its worth the risk...im buying a code reader today to see if there are any codes from the ecu beforehand...would no bulb or burnt bulb not allow the codes to be shown by the ecu/picked up by code reader?
the bulb is just there to annoy you with been on. The codes are not related to the light, get the scanner and you will get the codes... You can always get this and have an idea on the codes.....
