looking to do a cheap mod

Hey guys, my birthday is coming up next Monday and I'm gonna gonna ask for some money to do something to the car, got an 01 max, the only thing I've done is change the interior lights, I'm not looking to spend a ton, maybe 50-60 bucks, any of you guys have ideas? Ho much would a cold air intake run? I've also thought about putting an underglow kit on

Cheap modification

Convert your OEM airbox to Ghetto Airbox. Drill four holes (1 inch diameter) on the top of the air Filter holder. No money involved

It makes your car go BRAAAAAAHHHHHH!

Tons of info here on it and its free.
I guess since it is free it is actually NOT what you're looking for.
Do the GAB(after reading about it) and save the actual money for something else. A nice filter goes well with the GAB.
Changing the in cabin air filter is another thing.
Restore the headlights if they are getting cloudy and yellow.
I recently bought some really cheap leds to replace my parking lights. 10 dollars and still working after a few days hehe.
Maintenance is always a good thing before doing mods though. Keep that in mind.

Under your hood. It has a similar sound as an aftermarket intake. In my short experience with it, you can only really hear it from about half to full throttle. Most people will not be able to hear a difference under "normal" driving but it is there. Its also a performance mod other than just making noise.
I recommend giving it a try. There is one way that is 100% reversable involving a coat hanger. Many have tried it and some seem to use and like it. I personally dont recommend it but im just some guy with a Maxima, not an expert. I recommend doing one of the methods that involves drilling or cutting of the housing that holds the air filter. The piece that comes out with the two metals clips on top. You can easily find a used piece if you ever wish to go back to stock. I found one from a nice person here on the .org.

Cheap mod with only $60 to spend?
Get two oil filters and 2 5qt jugs of oil.

Might be better off putting that in savings for a rainy day.

Happy early birthday.

This is wise. Or replace the fuel filter. If you're dying for a mod you might consider a block off plate.

^^ All those things mentioned are good choices.

You also got more options such as:

1. Custom SRI intake = will run ~$80-100 so a bit more than you want to spend but a thought

2. FSTB = can be bought starting at ~$20 depending on what kind you get

3. Timing Advance = pay dealership to do it, should not cost more than $60

4. Grounding Kit = I think they're about $30 or so, maybe more for some other "brand name" ones. You can also make your own for cheap, and it's easy as **** as long as you're not a complete fool

5. New stickers and decals = +10HP gain! lolz nah just kidding..

Just some thoughts for ya to ponder

^ +1 I'd say if your looking for a mod to ad a little pep these are some inexpensive good ideas. Safely advancing the timing will add some pep and won't hurt or save your money up for something bigger but i'd say if that's all you have to spend put it away and save it rather than spending all your money on mods. Nothing wrong with having a little fun but if your a student on a tight budget think of priorities first.

Good idea. OP can do this as the lighting mod instead of underglow kit :vomit:

Shiftice.com for a how-to on the rewire.

Lots of great ideas here. I'll just add a couple --

Car Gauge Pro app for Android and a bluetooth module. Hours of entertainment with the ability to advance your timing, adjust idle speed, monitor everything on the car.

and/or

Claybar kit and some good polish and wax. Bring a little love to the outside of your car.

I second that Car Gauge Pro idea plus a wifi elm bluetooth adapter. And you can do all the good things listed above all for ~$20

Cmon, now. I thought you were reading all the threads. Bluetooth obd2 adapter and car gauge pro to increase timing. Plus, you get the benefit of a code scanner among many other functions.

Most people would advise against putting HID in your stock housing = horrible light output and blinding others on the road.

This thread got weird to me....maybe I'm old, but most of the modifications suggested in this thread aren't modifications at all.

If you're looking to do a cheap mod, I dunno.. most of the moderators here are old-fashioned. They pretty much insist on being wine-and-dined

On a more serious note, for $50 doing something like the GAB mod and changing out your spark plugs would be worthwhile. If you want a more 'stylish' look over the GAB method, just stay away from the Injen intake. On the 5th gen they put the cone filter directly behind the radiator, where the "cold" air intake sucks up the hot air coming off of the radiator.

So you're saying if you modify a stock car to not be stock, thats not really a modification?

I'm a bit confused, what do you consider a modification?

Spark plug? Painting bezels? LED light?? Wax?? Really? Well hell, I did put in aftermarket air in my tires....it's a mod. It's like on the v8 forums where a guy will list his plug wires and spark plugs in his sig. I guess it's cool to you guys, not trying to be a jerk, but to me a mod is something that enhances the performance.

That's your interpretation which is perfectly fine and also different than other's interpretations which is also perfectly fine. To me a mod does not need to enhance performance but is something that changes the stock setup to something the car was not initially designed to do. New spark plugs? Not a mod. Rewiring fog lights to come on on their own? Mod.

Yes, several suggestions (including one of my own) are not mods, but I don't see anything wrong with suggesting regular maintenance over a mod. Especially since the OP is asking for birthday money to do this which to me suggests (gross generalization by me forthcoming!!!) a level of funds that would be better suited going towards maintenance and not a mod anyways. Could I be wrong? Absolutely.

Anyways, we could disagree all day long, doesn't change the fact the OP hasn't been back for several days. Maybe they already took the money and went to a strip club

well I like my 3000k(winter bulbs) & 6000k output with the black housings & eyelids... if you've got the stock all chrome housings it can be quite much for the on comer... ha! well, I've got HIDs in my f150 with smoked headlights that has a 16" lift & my headlights are 6' from the ground with 7" HID narrow beam fogs that light up an entire mile, sylvania's just don't cut it at all anymore.

back to the matter at hand. OP, u there?

^ Well, I agree with WTF now that he cleared it up.

I run iridium plugs BTW, more powahhh!!!! Lolz ok....

But seriously OP wants an inexpensive birthday gift for his car which is already way better than asking parents for games or a new smartphone, especially when you're old enough to drive...I can respect that.

And lastly, speaking of birthdays.. I just got my birthday email from Maxima forums...Some mod needs to fix the spelling in that message lol

^ True, on some cars they do. Mostly tho, you cant go wrong with red considering its almost like a standard color for performance brakes..

I actually also like a racing blue calipers on lighter cars.

Really comes down to personal preference

Thats a hot color car btw. still with Majestic Blue/ Black calipers would be great i still think. Red is a nice complimentary color as well given your car color. Post pics...this threads likely going to become your mod page lolz

How bout check engine light orange? It would match the side markers nicely if they're not smoked yet....

Btw i couldn't imagine my evo colour max with red or blue calipers:vomit: maybe red with a brembo sticker clear coated on there....

With all those options and gpas rant about what a mod is,i can't wait to see what $60 brings to your Max..

I did orange with mine. I'm Majestic as well. I was worried it would be too bold and was prepared to change them but they turned out really nicely imo. I'll look for a pic.

Btw Im not surprised they look nice, any color combo resembling nfl/nba sports team logos usually look pretty good. Ny knicks style with the blue/orange.

My Z06 is Electon Blue from the factory, and the calipers come bright red, and I think it looks great.
