Leaking Gas On Fill Up
Leaking Gas On Fill Up
So, there has been some really odd happenings at the pump. A couple weeks ago, I was filling up and after it hit 1/2 a tank, gas started splashing on the ground. It was coming out of an evap hose that I think just normally vents fumes or something. I ended up having a little gas come out after 1/2 tank a couple times after this even though I was trying to just hit the 1/2 tank mark.
After a couple weeks of filling my tank halfway, I wasn't paying much attention and I ended up going to 3/4 without any gas hitting the ground. I thought maybe there was a crack in the tank or some valve was stuck open/closed for the evap system, but it seems like the problem is gone (for now).
Anyone have any idea what the problem could have been? Some things that may be factors:
-Driving up/down steep grades at least once a week for 30 minutes or so
-Parked facing uphill for long periods of time (a week or so without moving)
I am totally stumped after the problem seems to have gone away, so any ideas or suggestions would be great.

The EVAP hoses should never have any liquid gas in them, only fumes. If this were to be happening, I don't know it would be happening.
My best guess is that the filler tube is leaking and dripping on the EVAP hose and giving you the impression that the EVAP hose is leaking. But why the leak would stop is another thing I can't answer.
You are going to have to spend some time under the car looking very carefully.

Ha!
Ha! Yeah. It felt really sketchy driving the last couple weeks. It was definitely coming out of the rubber hose though. There is a little cylindrical thing with a hole in the bottom and a "splash guard" looking thing on one side of the hole (I believe those are accurate technical terms). It was coming out of that. I took that thing off so it was just a hose at the end and saw the gas coming out of that when I filled up a little too much.
I'll be checking it out this weekend when I replace my lower clutch line (leaking). I'll keep this updated on what I find out. I will try to fill it up all the way after checking it out. It is definitely odd, though. If anyone thinks of anything to check, let me know.
I am going to check the tank for signs of cracking/puncture (that I can see), seeing if the charcoal filter is full of gas, and seeing that electrical connections are good with everything (I heard there is a valve that opens and closes for fumes that can get stuck closed). I'm not really familiar with the EVAP system, so it will really just be exploration and hoping to see something amiss.
