Monkey in My A/C----weirding out on Me ?

Hi Friends,

I'm on to the next issue...

"Vent Control and AC."

ISSUE: When i'm driving short runs, the AC blows fine out of the Vents---strong and cold. HOWEVER, if i'm driving for longer periods---the AIR FLOW shifts from the Vents, to (Vents and Defrost) or "little to no air coming out of Front Vents?"

I PLAY with MODE SWITCH and then back to the ECO button, (for just outside air), and after a few minutes switch back to the AC mode. This works sometimes, BUT THEN it goes back to "little to no air" coming out of the Vents. WHEN i stop the car, and give it Rest, it returns to working Normal----UNTIL i put in some driving time.

???

CODE
: I ran a Code Check and got P0455 Evap, and P1448 Vent Control issues.

QUESTION(s):
1. What would do you think the issue is?
2. I was reading about the "EVAP Canister vent Control Value"...is this easy to change?

NOT sure what the problem is, or how to proceed as the AC blows cold. The problem is "AIR FLOW CHANGES" from front Vents to defrost or little to no air from Front Vents???

THANKS for any constructive Input....

I found an Image of the EVAP Canister....not sure where it is. I believe someone said it was in front of Drivers seat Underneath the Vehicle.

It's underneath the car in the far rear. I managed to fix the canister and valve by parking the car on a steep hill with wheel chocks instead of putting it on a lift.

This is interesting. It could be either the dash control panel or it could be the little motor that moves a door inside the ducts.

Several questions...

Is this auto or manual climate control?
Is the fan that blows the air still running?
If you press a button to change which outlet the air comes out of, can you hear anything moving?

Basically it kind of sounds like the system is shutting off. This could be a loose connector on the control panel unit or a loose wire in that connector.

If the motor that moves the door in the ducts were to lose power, I would think it would stay in the same position, but who knows.

The EVAP Canister Vent Control Valve is bolted on to the charcoal filled EVAP canister. It has a couple of hoses on it and is held on by 2 bolts with a 12mm head. The canister is located behind the driver side rear wheel and the valve is on the end towards the wheel.

There is a plunger inside the EVAP Canister Vent Control Valve that gets corroded and wont move. Sometimes you can remove the valve and free up the plunger with WD40 (or equivalent) and working the plunger back and forth with a screwdriver.

Hey Dennis,
  • I have it set to Manual, it goes to Manual when i push the Circulation button. If I press the auto button, it turns the circulation off.
  • Yes, the fan runs at all times
  • No, i don't hear anything moving or clicking when i change the air vent direction (by pushing the mode button).

QUESTION(s):
  1. You say there is a motor that moves the door inside the duct, what is that called and where is it located?
  2. You mentioned the EVAP Control Value, is that difficult to get to....AND is it possible that this could be the problem?

Thanks Man!

It is called the "Mode Door Motor" and it is under the dash. Open the driver's door and kneel down on the ground. Look up at the area behind the radio/heater controls, the side that is facing you.

Since it sounds like you have the auto climate controls, run the built-in self diagnostic. It starts on page 36 in the link below. It helps to read the directions once or twice before you actually run it.

It is easy to get to. It is out in the open behind the driver side rear wheel. And this is not the problem with your air conditioning.
