Gas knock

Hey guys I have a 03 with 160k miles on it driving down the road it sounds like a diesel but when I accurate it stops knocking. Only does it at steady throttle. Tried running 91 octane. Seems a little better. Anybody else have this issue.

Yes. It happens the most during the summer

Mine Dosent do it. Try a thicker oil in the summer. It may help quiet it down.

High mileage VQ35DE burn oil due to failure of secondary piston ring at the same time with a tapered piston. Install a PCV oil catch can, to prevent blowby oil coming from the PCV contaminating the intake manifold thus lowering the gas octane level that cause spark knock. Buy the ADD W1 oil catch can at eBay.

i swear op, that just happens to the most hilarious but sadly dead accurate description of engine knock on our cars that i have ever heard, and thanks colt149 for sharing knowledge.

My 03 has never done this to this date (10 years, 120k). My old VQ did it every now and then. The theory behind the catch can is valid along with higher octane gas and to add to that, if it doesn’t go away with that, try colder plugs. Any combination or all of the above should do the trick. And of course we have the difference between rod knock and spark knock, and I’m sure the OP was referring to spark knock.

Water Injection. Its carbon buildup from miles, and oil vapor contamination. Buy m15 water nozzle and nozzle holder from Devils Own.com. Install BEHIND mass air meter. Hook to with windshield washer hose on passenger side, get on highway......accelerate while holding down with windshield washer sprayer button. Run a half gallon or so through the engine. It does wonders for EVERYTHING. I'm on my phone, will elaborate when home if needed.

People might think this guy us off his rocker, but yes, this works. I've seen this being done on many cars in the past. Carbon buildup on the pistons technically can add a little higher CR, in turn requiring even higher octane requirements, which basically makes the problem worse. This gets rid of the carbon buildup and all other crap, and cleans the inside of the engine. Never done this on a fuel injected engine, but the concept and principle are there.

I do this almost daily. My main hobby is engine building in the boosted LSx world. Water/Meth injection is a given and goes on everything I build. When it is time for a freshen, most times you can still read the part numbes on the piston tops when tore down. It is a must or a performance oriented situation, and allows an aggressive tune up that is most times more aggressive than race gas. Water don't knock.

When I got my Max as a DD work car, it was pinging everywhere. I live in Houston, and summers are HOT. Rigged a ghetto kit on the car as described above, and got on the highway. Ran a whole reservoir through it. Car ran much much better, and detonation was gone. I have since hooked up a proper basic kit.

Trying to control the oil mist is a good idea, but won't fix the problem, just maybe keep it from getting worse. You must clean the chamber. FWIW you can make a nice catch can from 3 inch PVC and two end caps and couple fittings and stainless steel wool. 10 bucks.
