hi guys. now i have searched, and read all the threads about the types of engine oil. some say use synthetic, some say tri-synthetic. some say don't use synthetic, cause it starts leaking etc etc...

last oil change, about 2700 miles ago, i just used Quaker State 5W30 (i know, i know quaker sucks) i was actally looking for Mobil 1, non synthetic, but either they don't make it, or i just couldn't find it.

anyway, times coming up to do an oil change. the max has 62000 miles on it. i would like to get some input on what type of oil i should use.

If they put it in from the factory in Vettes and Porsches I wouldn't worry. To take a safe approach wait til 10,000 miles then go straight synthetic from there.

If you want regular oil made by Mobil, its in the blue bottles and its under the name Mobil, not Mobil 1. Mobil 1 is the name given to the synthetic oil. If you don't drive hard or make mostly short trips or drive stop and go or live in a cold climate, then changing every 3000 miles with regular oil is fine. Synthetics are still better at causing less wear on your engine though.

I had a Ford Probe GT and started Mobil1 Tri-Synthetic and put it in around 55K (bought it used) and never ever had a problem with leaking. I sold the car around 102K. Plus since the Probe had HLA cams, it did make a huge difference in keeping them lubed and quiet.

I changed my Max at 6500 to Syn and no probs so far....

to all opinions, or go to mobil1 and read the faq and make up your own mind. there is no 'right' answer. If you dont want extra cold start protection and dont have harsh driving conditions (like all city driving) or extreme hot or cold, than anything more than a quality dino oil may be diminishing returns for you..

i am sure you noticed that my max is a 2k and already has 62k on it. i used to drive all highway, but just got transfered. i now drive 6 miles to and from work. i think i will go Mobil 1. But should i go tri or just synthetic...

I have been using Mobil One in almost every car I have had and I have almost 70000 mi on my 2000 se and never had it in the shop period! no leaks!!!

i take my car to like jiffy lube or something and they use pennzoil. how's that compared to mobil 1? and what lube place has mobil 1?

Well, Penske Auto at KMart is a Mobil/Mobil 1 service center... Some Mobil stations do oil changes. I've even heard that some Nissan or GM dealers use Mobil oil. You can also buy the Mobil 1 at Target or someplace and then just give it to Jiffy Lube (or wherever) to put into your car -- this way you could get the cheap oil change but use the good oil They should also take a couple of bucks off the price because you brought in your own oil. I recommend this rather than going to Penske Auto because that will run you about $50!!!! Buy the Mobil 1 for $15 at Target/WalMart/etc and then get the cheap oil change at a local place, it'll be a lot cheaper that way.

read the faq mobil1.. it tells you all about a high mileage cars. And high mileage new car doesnt mean old car (older seal material).

there are only 2 types of oil conventional and synthetic.

Tri is MOBIL 1's name for their synthetic.

As said there is no straight answer because peoples driving conditions vary alot. Do the research, on this site and on businesses and decide for your self.

I am a synthetic oil fan because test prove it has superior properties as compared to regular oil. I think it is worth it to spend the extra money. Does my car benifit from these superior properties remains to be seen. I'll tell you in 100K miles.


As for a lube stop that uses mobil 1, I think kmart does for $39. But just change the oil your self and for about the price of a regular oil change you can have synthetic. Its real easy!
