Manual Transmission Fluid Recommendation

I looked up in the forums what transmission fluid to use. People say GL-4 mtf. But when I find that at O'Reilly's, it's 140w. When I called the Nissan Dealer, they said 75w-90. At O'Reilly's, it says that's GL-5.

So I don't know which to use. Any suggestions? Is the 140w GL-4 okay for the tyranny, or the other? I'm so confused...

Just get some redline MT-90. Works very well. If you want to go the extra mile get some of their anti-shock stuff. I put 2 quarts of the mt-90 in and 1 of the anti shock stuff and almost totally negated the 3rd gear crunch.

I second the Redline MT-90 which is pretty much the consensus on this forum. The shifter feels much smoother even after 40k miles since I changed it. Just be sure the car is level when you do the change to prevent overfilling.

I have also used Redline on another MT with great long-term success.

Redline/Amsoil 75w90 only. It is GL-4. If you live in the deep cold, then 85 is fine.

Plenty of threads on this...where's all the woodwork you guys are coming from lol

I've been using MT90 since I got the car. It's worked well for me.

Last year I had to put some Nissan MTF in it when I had to dump the fluid unexpectedly. It was the only GL-4 I could find locally. It shifted like crap with that stuff in there. Once I swapped the MT90 back in it started shifting better.

The Redline is definitely worth the extra money. Especially since it only gets changed every few years.

I'm looking for Redline MT90 at parts stores websites around here, but no one carries it. Where do you normally get it? I found it at some motorcycle shops like Harley Davidson, but I bet they want a fortune for it.

I don't know. I searched the forums several times here and with Google...couldn't find it. Weird.

Pep Boys sells redline. Maybe the MT90 just isn't showing up on their website but it's at the store.

Pep Boys usually has very high prices. I always buy it on eBay and get a good deal. There are a lot of people selling it and they'll have deals on multiple bottles.

Just remember the 5-speed and 6-speed take different amounts.

In another post you talked about possible clutch issues. I'd make sure they're sorted out before swapping fluid since pulling the tranny requires draining the fluid. No need to do a fluid swap only to drain it a few weeks later.

Well, the tyranny fluid leaks out right now through the shifter yoke seal fairly quickly, so I'm fixing that right away before I damage the tyranny. Not sure what my friend's mechanic put in the tranny when I had him top it off, but hopefully it was the right stuff. It's shifting ok, so I think it'll be fine for now. The seal gets replaced tomorrow, which means I have to refill the tranny. I can have my friend do the tranny work later and keep the oil for after it's done. I don't feel like pulling the tranny.

If you're not 100% sure whats in there I'd swap it out ASAP. The GL-5 will cause damage over time even if it's driving fine.

I'll find out what's in it and replace it with MT-90 tomorrow.
