Engine Revs but no Acceleration

Hi everyone!

Can someone help me narrow down what the problem is? I have a 2000 GLE with about 186,000 miles. The problem occurs after a full warm up, running for any number of minutes, fluids in are all topped off.

When I'm about to go on a freeway on ramp at around 30MPH and about to merge and press on the gas, it the seems to lag, engine RPM's go up and the car doesn't move until about 5 seconds later where it seems like something just kicked in and off I go.

Going uphill at about 30MPH then pressing the gas the car revs with very slow acceleration.

Going uphill with 2 people in the car at about 20MPH and trying to gas it up, the car actually slows down even with the RPM's going up, it's at a snails pace at this point slowly edging up the hill about a few minutes.

It seems to me like a down shifting issue, but if I don't gas it hard (no more than 1 inch down) it seems to be totally ok. Any ideas on where to start looking?

Thanks in advance!

My old Benz had a similar issue going up hills. Turned out to be a bad crank sensor. Seeing as cam/crank sensors are a known issue on our cars, that may be it. Left unchecked, it can turn into hot no starts and stalling.

I'd also clean the MAF and run a tankful of Techron cleaner for good measure. Scanned for codes?

I got it back from the mechanic today and after he spent a bunch of time changing the cats, his last try was the MAF and that did the trick. My car is back!

Wait...that causes bad shifting...but it actually caused it to completely not shift at all or super slips? That's pretty bizarre for a maf.
