My Son was given a 2001 maxima

My Son was given a 2001 maxima 124k miles looks, and runs well.
the service engine soon light is on, car runs fine. His uncle says the codes were scanned a while back he thinks it was random misfire

@124K miles I'm certain the plugs have never been done, and they are on the short list with (coil)s and the ignition condensor

I've ordered a ELM327 OBD2 bluetooth reader from amazon wondering If I'm able to retreive codes without a scanner? (old timer with Z32 VG30DE experiecne) I've used the SEARCH feature

So yea, can I read codes without a code reader?

Thank's in advance Guys

Yes, you can, but it's not worth the trouble.
Buy yourself a reader, such as https://www.amazon.com/Vehicle-Reade...db+code+reader - it's only a few dollars.

With our cars, you'll need it repeatedly; it will pay for itself soon.

To turn off the SES light, disconnect your battery overnight.
If the light comes back on, there is indeed something wrong with your ignition subsystem. The EC section of the FSM lists the possible causes on page EC-584:
  • Harness or connectors (the ignition primary circuit is open or shorted),
  • Power transistor unit built into ignition coil,
  • Condenser,
  • Crankshaft position sensor (REF),
  • Crankshaft position sensor (REF) circuit.

There's a bad coil (or maybe more than one). If it's not misfiring enough to test, then you can wait for it to get worse or start swapping coils with a known good one and clear the code each time.

Reset the ECU and I untaped the condesnser, and cleaned the connector
We drove the car about 12 miles so far no SES light

If the integrity monitors are soon "ready" I'll head for the smog shop and pray

Car Gauge Pro is another app I like a lot. It's not a pretty as Torque but it seems to sync up and read the codes faster.

I do like the way Torque lets you setup multiple dash boards with custom gauges.

I'd oredered the condenser fron the local dealer and it arrived this morning, we drove the maxima to the dealer and on the way back it threw the SES light @ 24 miles since resetting the ECU

the car stuttered and the light came on

We pulled over and plugged in the new condenser drove another 5 miles with the SES light on

waiting on a scanner an autel AL519 6 Hibatchi coils, and 6 ngk laser iridium spark plugs

As mentioned at the beginning of this thread, the car starts instantly and it idles, and accelerates well.

The coils, and plugs are do to arrive in the next day or so. I've read all the threads here, after searching p1320

Got to admit I'm feeling a bit nervous about getting this car right for my son

I'm assuming a bad CPS would cause hard starting. and/or even spark knock
issues, that said we are into it 6 hitachi coils 6 NGK IX plugs and a condenser

Boy I'd sure like to get this thing smogged so the kid can drive it

If you can't, I'll come take it off your hands. Lol.

Good luck. My coils always failed pretty quickly on me. I would get intermittent misfires for a week at most before the coil failed 75%+. I scored a full set of 2001 coils for $35 from the local junkyard so I always carry a spare in the trunk. Flathead to pop the plugs and see which one is dead. 10mm socket to pull it. Had 3 die on me in 170k miles. 1 at 90k and the other 2 somewhere around 130-150k

Even taught the wife how to diagnose it when the last one died. She limped it 40 miles home with a totally failed coil :'O
