Mass Air Flow sensor. It lives in the intake tube between the air filter box and the throttle body. It measures the volume of air entering the engine so the computer knows how much fuel to give it to keep the proper AFR (air/fuel ratio)

If the MAF is dirty or failing it can cause all sorts of problems. It doesn't always throw a code either.
Here's a thread describing how to clean it. It's a cheap and easy thing to try first.

Is this car new to you?

How long of a delay is it?
Has it done it since you've owned the car?

I'd go ahead with the MAF cleaning. A dirty MAF will be slow to respond to changes in the air flow and could delay the increase in fuel delivery as air flow increases.

That won't do anything.

Go to the junkyard and steal every 00-03 maf.

Yeah, probably time for a new MAF. Junkyard is good if you get lucky or get the Hitachi brand from rockauto.com

You do need a MAF from a 02/03 though. The 00/01 MAF is different.

Disconnecting the battery wont do anything on the 02/03 cars. It will erase some memory and CELs on the 00/01 cars if you leave it disconnected long enough. That's where the idea comes from.

You said your check engine light is on. Generally any auto parts store will check the light for you at no cost. So I'd start there!

you have to make sure the cars coolant is between a specified temp.
You may need a scan tool!
If the coolant is too hot the idle may be normally higher then the target idle speed.
So if its too cool it may be higher too.
