Avoiding sales tax?

OK... dumb question. This is unrelated to Maximas, but I am planning on getting a new 2k2 6 speed and...

I live in LA. Can I go to Vegas, buy a Max with no sales tax (no tax in Nevada), drive the car to CA, register it here and be happy with over $1k in savings?

I think that they will collect your tax when you register it.

I could be mistaken, but I believe most states make you pay sales tax in the state you register your car. I bought mine private party out of state, but had to pay local state sales tax upon registration.

Every state will charge you sales tax upon new car registration.

Every state has a different law, but when you register a used car which you have had registered in a different state for a certain period of time (6 months or more generally), you will normally not have to pay sales tax. This is my experience in a few different states.

Explore the car registration policies of used cars, find someone who lives in Nevada and register and plate the car at their address until that statute runs its course. This, of course, would be considered tax fraud and illegal, but that's the only way to accomplish what you are trying to do.

Not every state, BABY!!!

I bought mine in Mass (5% sales tax) but NO SALES TAX IN NH, baby!

So, when I buy it, they have to deliver it to me in NH and have PROOF that it was delivered to NH. They said they take a picture of him handing me the keys in front of my house.

When you get back to CA, they'll tax you. Or you can use a friend in Nevada (like mentioned) or rent a mailbox in Nevada and use that as your mailing address to register the car, then transfer to CA... but don't get caught or it'll cost more than $1k!

I used to live in Boston. I considered buying a car up in Nashua to save sales tax, but I would have had to register the car to an address in NH for, at least, one year before registering it to my actual address in Boston or the state of MA would charge me sales tax on the vehicle.

As another example, when I moved to Boston from Washington, D.C., I took with me a vehicle I had owned for several years and was not charged sales tax since it had been registered in another state, in my name, for over a year.

That's pretty funny that they will actually take a picture of you in NH...of course, how will they know that the house you are standing in front of is actually in the state of NH?

I think, perhaps, I will just pay the $1k and enjoy by freedom from prison.

Re: Re: Not every state, BABY!!!

He was totally serious, and very specific. The picture will include me, him, the car, and my house with the number visible.

He said the registry is really cracking down on the "way it used to happen" (I signed a waiver at a different dealer last time that *said* they delivered to me in NH). I asked if that was possible again (I want to get in it as quick as possible) and he said "no way." He also said if the registry has doubts, he'll provide his proof and they'd have to send someone to investigate... apparently to my house to see if it matched the picture.

State laws...

There is a bunch of states with no state income tax. FL, TX and about 9 others.

Alabama does not require auto insurance.

Deleware has no sales tax. You should buy your car there!

NH - it's where to live!

unless you plan to own property... no sales tax, no income tax. So everything is run off property tax, and ours is the highest in the US. Also, just instituted an "if it moves, we tax it" tax (cars, taxis, limos, buses, trucks, etc) because the property tax is killing us.

Washington state doesn't have state income tax either... we have the highest gas tax in the country though.... and sales tax averages around 8.7-8.9%
