MPG mixed driving....How come most of you are getting so low??

Traveled 334.3 miles
Used up 12.9 gallons

Comes out at 25.9mpg

I could have gone at least 480miles before a refill.

Conditions and events:
17 degrees
-1 wind chill
NW wind 15-25mph, gust up to 30mph
one other passenger
HWY top speed, 95mph
HWY average about 75mph
City top speed, 40mph
City average about 35mph
Stop/Go rush hour comming back
Stopped 3 times for bathroom break
Stopped once for dinner
Let the car idle for 10 mins
HWY traveled: 60,169,35W,494,100,35E,694,61

And yes, I let the car downshift a gear or two to pass slow cars in on two lane roads.

BTW, I'm formally known as ScreamingVQ

Straight highway I got 27.5 mpg in my Maxi.

Mostly I get around 24-25ish though because of morons, occasional races, and grin-induced heavy throttle runs up through the gears just for fun. In spite of that, I still get good mileage

I have a complete listing of my mpg since I got my car in '00. I never hit over 22mpg I think. People say its because Hawaii doesn't have enough driving road. On average, my driving time is less than 30min at a time. On a daily drive to work, it was less than 15 miles and from '02 its less than 5 miles so that could be a cause.

I just filled up today, I did 300 miles on 15.3 Gallons. So about 19.66666 MPG or so. 50% country road(50 MPH average) and 50% city.

Well I currently get 20mpg with Mixed driving. But honestly, Mixed driving is considered to be the "CITY" number that shows on the sticker price, because that consists of stop and go and highway driving.

On highway, even with all the mods I can still get 27mpg.

yeah, anything besides steady-speed highway driving is considered city.

I have gotten as high as 28 mpg on one tank on a highway trip with my 2001 Max with no engine mods and app 10000 miles. In order to get avg mpg, you should be doing it for many tanks of gas. One tank could be several tenths of a gallon more/less than another tank which will affect the calculation. Over time a true average will be achieved. Around town, I get between 15 and 17 mpg depending on how short the trips are.

Not really. That would have no effect on the MPG calculations. The only way it would become a factor is if you used ALL of your gas.

Figuring your mileage has nothing to do with whether your tank is empty or not. It has to do with how much gas you used since your last fillup. If you fill and the tank takes 5.7 gallons, then that is how much you use; if you fill and it takes 14.9 gallons, then that's how much use. When you fill, do you top off the tank or just stop when it clicks off? Do you fill it the same every time? After the nozzle shuts off, you can top off with a few more tenths. Here in Oregon, we have to have the attendant fill up the tank (sucks), so you don't know for sure. Also, if a different driver fills the car they might fill it differently and that could affect the mileage. As I said, over time you will achieve an actual average.

I've driven my 02 Max around for 3,200 miles now ( i got it on Dec 27 ) and on average I get 17-19 mpg only city miles so far. Is that bad or average?

That's decent. On my 2k1 I used to get about 15-16mpg in San Francisco driving about 5 miles to and from work. I did often leave at around 5:45am, so the engine might have been cold. The Maxima needs some time to warm up, once it's warmed up, with freeway driving you should get over 20.

I haven't noticed any effect from breaking the engine in or with gasoline types.

You can try running your tire pressure to about 33-34psi

I got my '02 SE at the beginning of the year... about 2600 miles on it so far, no oil change yet, but its due in about 2 weeks (have most of you changed the oil earlier than 3000 on the first one you did, or was it around 3000?), and I'm reading between 22.2 - 22.5 MPG on the car... should I expect more? I'm refilling about every 300 miles, give or take depending on how close the Exxon is.. I'm seeing some people post 25+ and I'm wondering how you're doing it... do you think TCS is eating some of it up? Most of my driving is highway... like 75%... what do you guys think?

I guess that makes sense for you because you don't pump your own gas. For me I fill my car up until the pump stops, this is probably very precise becuase I use the same pump every time.
