I had a interesting race with a volvo XC T5 tonight.

I was driving along and I noticed a volvo XC(the wagon) pull up behind me pretty fast, he tail gated me until I stopped at a red light. There was a jeep in the left lane and the volvo was behind me in teh right lane. The light turns green and I drive ahead normaly keeping an eye on this guy. Once the volvo had room in the left lane he floored it in to the the left lane and came up on me REAL fast. I was going about 40 MPH and I slammed the car into second and it was on! Once I floored it he was on my rear bumper and his velocity got him up to my rear door, top of second comes up real fast and he is just sitting there on my rear door, WTF?! I thought.. So I attempt to slam the shifter into 3rd gear but the notchy shifter showed it's ugly face again! At this point Mr. Volvo wagon guy was side by side with me, I quickly got it into 3rd and I started pulling on him. By about 85 MPH he was about 1/2 a car lenght behind me!

At first I am sying this guy has to be chipped! Thic car was quick for a 15.0 second car. But then I remembered this is the 248 HP 5spd auto moddel and I knew that they trap out at around 98 MPH! Never the less I think I equally suprised him by pulling on him. Big thumbs up to the volvo, I have a deap respect for this car hanging with me as long as it did. In stock form this car is the ultimate sleeper IMO.

If I needed a wagon and fast car it would be a Volvo, those things really do haul. I wish they were still RWD though, those were the really fun ones

I would love to do one of these http://www.converseengineering.com/.
Can you imagine the look on peoples faces if you kicked their teeth in with an old 240 wagon or sedan? (those are rear wheel drive) Hell, put a supercharger on it and you would be killing '02 SE Maximas!

Re: I had a interesting race with a volvo XC T5 tonight.

I didn't think much of Volvo's until my mother got a V40. I considered them to be overpriced, underpowered, with uninspired handling. I was wrong about all three. They come decently equipped and you don't have to spend an excessive amount of money to option it out, unlike a BMW. Volvo's don't make full boost in first gear but from a roll, Volvo's will surprise you with how hard they pull. Oh and for $1500 one can get an new ecu, exhaust, downpipe, air filter and bump the V40/S40 hp from 160 to 220 and torque from 170 to 260!

yeah, volvos have gained a bit of respect in my book, and even more after their redesigning a few years back from the complete box shape...i hated volvos then, but now the newer designs look better, i like the S60 and S80

When did the Volvo Cross Country wagon become fast? I remember a MT comparo a few months back between the Cross Country and the Audi All-Road. The Audi killed the Cross Country in acceleration. I think the XC did like high 15@90mph.

That V-8 versioned one is pretty interesting, but I still like the old turbo 4's the best. They weren't the fastest, but they were fun to play with.

It must have been a V70 T5 with a black bra on it then. It was with out a dow't a T5 version.

iwannabmw, the last volvo that had a V8 in it was a Volvo 780 Bertone. Volvo does not sell any V8 volvo's in the US. They use a 2.4 L 5 clylinder engine with a lot of boost!

speedtrip, yep, IPDusa.com is a good start. Add a down pipe on it too and the power will go up quite a bit more. I almost boight a S70 T5 5spd, I was going to chip it and the works but the max was to tempting

I've had respect for Volvos since 97 when a T5R wagon kept up with me (VR4) and my buddy (Supra TT) on the highway from 80-130 mph. To say the least I was very shocked

My girlfriends father is a vovlo lover and buys the T5 models and AWDR and I drive them and yeah they are quick but the AWD on the R has a very touchy tractionn Control which causes differential failure fast

Converse Engineering up in Maine converts old Volvos to V-8s by taking the old 302 Mustang motor and dropping it in the engine bay. There's a reference just below my original post in this thread that someone else put up.

I happened to test drive in a old 240 wagon with vette engine when GF sold his IPD 850 Turbo in mass. It was quite strange

Thats what my girlfreinds father is waiting for. In the mean time he has a 88 740(I think) turbo with a upgraded turbo kit and some other IPD goodies. The thing is black and is Flawless with 60k miles on it. I can't believe the thing looks new off the showrook floor. I wish nissan paint was that good but the newer ones have ****ty paint. I would like to see a nissan wagon here in the states.

Yeah I feel ya My parents first Volvo was a 1985 Volvo 740 GLE 5 speed. They took a cruise from Germany to Sweden to go directly to the Factory to buy theirs. Then in 1994 my parents bought the 1995 Volvo GLT. Really nice car, one of these days if my mom ever decides to give that car up. Ive got plans for it.(Grinch Grin)

Did you see XC or T5 on the car? It wouldn't have both. My XC does have a turbo 5-cylinder but it has a low pressure turbo (hence 197hp). They save the T5 label for the high pressure turbo (on almost the same engine) that puts out 248hp.

I agree with this... the XC only had 197hp so unless he's done some SERIOUS modding, it was a V70 T5.

I was at the drag strip last fall and watched a stripped out, beige Volvo 740 Turbo wagon run 12.8s....I was like WTH....the next time he came back to the staging area....I took a look under the hood, and found a Corvette LS1....wow....I guess the vette motor was bone stock too....imagine once it got modded....

I agree, it's one or the other.
From my "Volvo friend": "There is no such thing as a Volvo XC T5. The XC (Cross country) is an all wheel drive, automatic, low pressure turbo 198HP wagon. The T5 is a front wheel drive, 5 speed manual or manumatic, high pressure turbo 247HP wagon.
The upcoming V70R is the amalgam of these two: all wheel drive, 6 speed manual or manumatic, (super?)high pressure turbo 300HP wagon.
As a note, ALL three of these vehicles are built on the same engine: inline all aluminum 5 cylinder, 20 valve engine that produces 168HP as a normally aspirated base model. Displacement varies from 2.3 (high pressure turbo) to 2.5 litres (normally aspirated)."

"upcoming" V70R? They're on the streets now. I think you meant "upcoming S60R" but that's a sedan, not a wagon.

Which is why I replied to YOUR post saying "I agree".
I just added more detail.

As for the V70R, I meant the new 300 hp one. It's not out yet, it's supposed to start production in 2003.

"The Volvo S60R will be built at Volvo's factory in Ghent, Belgium, and the V70R at the Torslanda plant in Sweden. The start of production is planned for early 2003 and the volume will be limited."
