Go drive something slower, then go back to your Max right after. You will appreciate your Max a whole lot more.

I definitely miss the torque and the freeway pull.

It's not really slow . . . you just keep getting more used to it!

I just sold my 1998 Camaro SS, which turned in the low 12's. I got tired of everyone wanting to race every time I came to stop. Then, if I got beat, I'd dump in a few thousand just to gain a tenth or so. It got old . . . was tough getting in and out of . . . was loud . . . was expensive to insure . . . and you felt every pothole and bump in the road. Yes, it was fast and handled like a slot car, but . . . . . . . .

Going from a low 12 second car to the Maxima was not a let down. It's a wonderful car, and it has great potential in the engine. I believe in "break them hard, and they run hard." I ran it a quarter mile at a time until I was used to the car. During the first week, I disconnected the battery cables, and let it set for about 2 hours while I waxed it and such. The I got in, started it up, pulled it out onto the road and lit up the tires - hopefully reprogramming the ECU. I've learned how to get the (automatic) trans to shift for me - it's all in the foot! Mine shifts firm (could be more firm though) when I want it to.

I've had three races since purchasing the car in January - one Mustang GT/V8 . . . 2 Acuras. Seems the Acuras go hunting for the Maximas. One was a plain jane 3.2 TL and the other was a CL "S" model. The Max pulled both Acuras . . . the Mustang pulled me through about 70 mph, then the Max caught up, but couldn't pass it.

It's all in the driver. However, I've been adding parts nearly every week. I don't want to screw with the ride qualities, nor the exhaust. I beleive this exhaust is quite capable until you get into mega horsepower. The only things I have left to do are: clear side markers, better tires, tinted windows, H&R springs, FTB, and probably a Vortech. Everything else will be my own mods. I've been drag racing since the late 60's . . . IT'S IN THE BLOOD . . . regardless of what you drive!

great.....just f*cking great.....

I'm nowhere close to as mechanically inclined as you seem to be
and I've had countless encounters with Nissan service that led to
nothing but a waste of time and money.

YO IT's OK.....you think if i brought my car to Star Nissan they'd
take a look at my car with an objective frame of mind?

I agree Maximas are slow but...

It all depends on who you are racing. If you want to feel good pull up to a civic.
If you want to feel bad pull up to mustang.

But its the truth all these mods and **** for a 4 door family car oh brother its a waste. With all the money that is put into making a maxima fast or look good you could of bought nice bmw, lexus, or SUV.

I ran my maxima in the 1/4 mile and ran a 15.7. That is soo slow compared to even my stock auto 99 prelude that ran 15.5. And my 90 mustang forget it I was in the high 13's stock.

It's definitely a waste of money, but you have to think of modding as a hobby. Stamp collecting, sports cards collecting, comic book collecting, etc. are all a waste of money, but some people find interest in those hobbies.

I could've bought a Supra TT with what I spent on the car, but modding a Maxima is different/unique.

Thats true y2kev

But im sure you could of got a nice used supra for everything you put in your car. Im sure you spent over 20 grand on mods and bought the car for over 20. There are alot of cars I much rather have that are 40 gees.

I understand the hobby of it-- its just really expensive and is a liabilty rather than an asset.

Ac -

Have you tried to identify if you have an issue regarding your variable intake?

If not you should. I can tell you this, it is near impossible to convice Nissan that you have this problem without some empirical evidence. I assume you read my thread and that Yo will be of tremendous help to you.

But, I went to them knowing where the problem was, with before and after dyno evidence and with an identical car for a test comparison - AND THEY STILL WON'T ADMIT THERE IS A PROBLEM.

The test I identifed in my thread is the way to come up with nearly dispositive evidence. That is, rolling in 3rd through 4th gear against a comparable stock maxima to see if that car pulls away from you. If it does pull away, disconnect the Vias on the other car and do it again. If you are even this time, then it is almost certainly a problem with the variable intake. Finally, compare with both VIAS disconnected.

I'm still working with Nissan after performing the test above. The guys we had drive the car just aren't familiar enough with the car to be able to feel the difference. Also, they think that 1 car length in 3rd from 4k - 5740k is no big deal!

good luck.

LOL. Feel bad about pulling up next to a mustang??

Sure some mustangs are faster than a 5spd maxima. But take the last gen GT 4.6. With y pipe and intake, a 5spd can walk a stock one. It is really fun to pick on them. As for the 6cyl mustangs - they can forget it.

You probably meant to say I'd feel bad about pulling up to a Z28.

As for 15.7 - I presume you have an automatic. There are numerous 5spd maximas on this site that have run sub-15's stock. Madmax2k ran a 14.7x a couple weeks ago bone stock.

That's not bad for a grocery getter. As for spending 500-600 on basic bolt ons like intake and y pipe - big deal. Sure, you aren't going to get into the 13s without spending some more dough - but heck - what does a 70 shot cost anyway.

acMAX is A/T so it may be a Variable intake dilema. My car pulls like crazy...and I'm the one who pounds on the car everyday...but every so once in a while my car "feels" different.
Maybe its all in my head.
If you think it is variable intake - do you have any idea what is wrong with it?

On mine, you can see the actuator move the rod so it has got to be inside.

Lucky for acMax, the dealer likely will have an a/t 2000/1 maxima on the lot.

Presumption was right I have an automagic. Z28 or V* mustang whatever they are stock and the max is stock - or both cars are modded its stil a V6 family 4 -door. and can't hang with them.

v6 mustangs get beat by bolt on civics - so i know they are a walk. shot a of nos on a maxima is not to bright especially if its your daily driver.

Last time I checked a Cobra wasn't a GT. Although, I believe they changed the GTs starting with the 99 year so I should have said 98 not 99.

The funny thing is that we can even compare them. Recent posts have 2k2 6spds running 14.2/14.3 albeit with lower mph. On my last visit to the track several weeks ago, two of my friends raced. One with a 96 cobra with intake, pulleys and exhaust, the other with modified 5spd max. They ran each other several times with the max consistently running 14.7s at 95 and the Cobra varying from 14.2-14.4 at 100. The max even won one race.

Oh brother - we are comparing a mustang cobra to a maxima now ? What is this world coming to. The maxima wins one race with a higher 1/4 mile time and now they can walk over mustangs. oh brother im getting sick over here.

I haven't been able to identify what exactly the problem is. I'm just thinking that it might be the VIAS. What I do know is this....when
my car had just an intake, I would race my friend (who owns a '95 Legend) and he would beat me approximately %50 of the time in a quarter mile race. I never did the manual shifting all I used was the
O/D button. 2K1 (auto) Nissan Maxima against a '95 Acura Legend (auto). The only mods both cars have are an intake. The final outcome should be clear......maxima all the way. so what gives? I have to give credit to this guys acura though....it's ABNORMALLY fast....then again.....do i just think that cuz he beats me half the time?

Do you have some kind of reading comprehension problem?

YOU compared the maxima to a cobra.

You are also the one that started with the generalization that if I wanted to feel bad - go pull up to a "mustang."

My response was clear. V6 mustangs are not faster than 5spd maximas. And I said that the last style v8 GTs also are not faster than 5spd maximas with a y and intake - heck they aren't faster stock. You haven't disputed that yet so I presume you agree.

Obviously, the 99+ GTs and all the Cobras are substantially faster than Maximas - and I never said they weren't. In fact, I have no doubt they are faster.

The point I was trying to make is that I find it quite amazing that we've got 4 door sedans running within three to four tenths of a second of the published times of GTs/Cobras, and that a maxima running 14.7s can beat a Cobra (running a 14.4) to the lights. (Of course, if you had actually read my post - you would have noticed the point I made about trap speed of the two thereby implicitly stating that the Cobra would walk away after the 1320.)

Your sweeping generalizations and attempts to twist what I say into a generalization that I did not make, don't help you make your point. Which by the way seems to be that since you ran a 15.7 in an automatic, all maximas are slow.

Well, until you do a roll with another auto or a dyno you won't know. I would not even bother taking it to the dealer until you test it that way.

I mean I have a dyno that shows a nearly 40 hp loss at redline and I can't get them to agree there is something wrong with the car.

I agree with your very thorough and detailed assesment. I do think however on the contrary that if you pull up to a mustang cobra you will be smoked granted both cars are stock and 5 speeds.

The whole point is I was very disappointed in the Maximas performance when running a 15.7 with a CAI, Stillen Y-Pipe, and straight pipe from the cataltlic converter. I ran a 15.6 with my sport stick prelude stock. My maxima does wiegh more and has 18's however I still feel that is slow considering my performance upgrades.

Yes I know there are maximas that run faster such as Y2kev and so forth, but thats after paying 3-4 gees for a supercharger and I'm sure another 5 gees for bolt ons and engine work.

If you add just as many performance upgrades on a mustang again you will feel bad when you watch its tailights from start to finish.

I had a 90 mustang with a 351 cleveland in it that ran in the 12's with nitrous oxide. And low 13's without. I was just agreeing with a fellow maxima.org person (acmax) that maximas are slow. They are meant for a car seat and groceries not the 1/4 mile.

I ran both auto and 6spd type2 legends... Funny thing was, I lost to the auto but beat the 6spd..

BTW.. I might be having the same problem b/c I have practically all the minor bolt-ons but I still even out with other maximas that are stock or slightly modded... Maybe it's in my head.. I heard next week is Free 100point inspection week.. Hopefully, they'll find something wrong..

One question though. Wont a pop-charger or CAI void warranty for the VIAS???
