Wheel Spin

How the hell do I get the max to stop screeching the tires when I press the throttle halfway in 3rd (auto).

And what exactly does LSD do? (limited-slip... not acid )

Press the throttle less. Seriously.

If you are getting TOO MUCH wheel spin then you need to develop a feel for how much throttle to give it without spinning and without bogging. You also need to develop your feel for how much wheel spin is too much. That just takes practice.

Aside from that, check your tire pressure. If it is too high, you'll break loose a little sooner. You can lower it but don't go too much lower than recommended or you'll end up with too much wear on the outsides of the tire.

Or, you can get better tires or a tire/wheel combo that gives you a wider contact patch with the ground.

No, I meant 3rd... I live in Corona, CA if anyone wants to see for themselves.

I beleive something is wrong with my tires...

Edit: I just went outside and tested again, during the day it doesn't happen. Seems like the problem arises when it reaches 47F... which is almost every single night.

And why would I BS this? Only reason people BS (usually) is to make their car sound better, I don't think major slippage is a good thing.

Second Edit: One good thing about it being cold (i was driving 2 days ago in 37F) is the engine is noticeably much more powerful then during the day.

Went outside when it was 57F... Still the same problem. In 3rd and tires slip when going 1/2 - 3/4th from a stop.

Maybe there is no more "rubbers" on your tire?

I feel your pain!!!

After a few mods my Max has developed a bad case of tire spinning whenever I pull up next to an A4 or 3-series atty:

hey melteye, i live around your area (riverside) but I never experience that type of third gear wheel spin. Maybe it really could be your tires.

My tires are new (I got the car less then a week ago) so I doubt it's the absence of rubber hehe

I am in Riverside alot, maybe sometime I could show you... I don't want to keep these tires if the dealer sold me bad ones.

the bridgestone potenza's are not great tires, but only in rainy conditions. Are you saying that the tires are spinning at WOT when the auto tranny shifts from 2nd to 3rd? I've been trying to see if that happens with mine, but I can't duplicate it.

I am at a stop sign... The shifter is on 3. I then press the gas 3/4 of the way down and the tires spin and then it takes off. (i actually get some forward movement while it screeches)

OOOoooo I see I thought you were saying that when your driving around(vehicle in motion) and you hit the gas only 3/4 of the way you get wheel spin... I didnt know you were talking about from a dead stop. Your tires are spinnig because you have a car with an excellent above average engine with plenty of torque on hand. Just learn the period of accelaration right before the tires break lose and youl;l be fine.

I have gotten it down to making the car only make chirping noises hehehe... Push it down until I hear it lose traction then let off enough for it to stop, then when I reach 15 I accelerate harder.

300 miles to go until I reach 1000 Then I can WOT.

Nothing mysterious here. At a stop the tranny goes back to low gear. Just like what us stick-shift guys do for ourselves. Even while a wheel is spinning it is giving some traction, so you will move forward.

And LSD (limited slip differential) makes one-wheel spin much more difficult. With LSD the side with better grip gets more power instead of much less (with a 1-legger).

Some things i noticed on my Max.

When i first got it, the wheels chirped and spun on almost any type of surface regardless of whether i was at WOT or not.

As the miles started racking up, the wheelspin started going away. I'm assuming that the tires have finally "broken in" as well and thus a bit more grip. Of course, wet road traction is still very tricky even at 2k rpm from a stop.

When i installed the FSTB torque steer also seems to have gone away, it feels like both wheels are more planted on the ground equally. It also helped get rid of some of the wheel spin which causes the steer.
