Unleashed the fury of the maxima at the track

The only problem was the fury tank was empty. I went up to Darlington Dragstrip last night with some friends for a good time at the track. The weather was about 65-70 degrees and the rain was coming in. My first run was a 16.275 and that was just leaving it in drive and stomping the gas. The next three went like this: 15.982 @ 87.8mph, 16.003 @88.52mph, and 16.015 @ 88.33mph. All in all it was a great time, but I was hoping for more. I figured (more like prayed) that I would be in the mid 15's with the y-pipe and JWT pop charger. Maybe on a cooler day, because once we left @ 11pm the temp dropped and it seemed to pull harder. That figures. Are these times good, bad, or just the normal? Thanks for reading, any comments welcome.

hmm...I smell an automagic

You'll get into the high-15's by manually shifting up through the gears so that the shift occurs right at redline. Otherwise, yeah, 16's on a 00-01 auto.

Just curious, what were your 60' times? Were you torque braking at all? Or did you just stomp on it from idle in D?

Yep, it's a autotragic. The first run which was a 16.275 was with it just in drive. The rest of the runs, I was manually shifting @6300rpm so that when the tran finally decided to shift it wouldnt bump the rev limiter. I was torque braking upto around 1700rpm, but I was pussing out and worriing about my tranny .
The 60 ft times on the last 3 runs went like this: 2.415 2.448 2.434. I figure if anything, I was consistant once I started to manually shift. From 15.982 thru 16.015, that only .033 variance on 3 runs.

doh. hitting the rev limiter is bad

Try shifting at around 5900-6000rpm in 1st and then about 6200-6300ish in 2nd and you should be solidly in the high-15's next time.

You're 60's look pretty good, IMO, and yes, they are very consistent so that's a good thing

Nothing against anyone, but isn't "unleashing the fury" a bit dramatic for a high 15-second car?

I do have something constructive to say though, to take advantage of the 5th gen's variable intake and higher power at high RPMs you really should be manually shifting the auto every time. Don't hold the brake torque either, just "flash" it at the last possible second. This makes the tranny act like the stall speed was a little bit higher and you'll get a harder launch.

I will try the 'flash' thing next time out. Just to clarify, I never hit the rev limiter. Is there a benifit to shifting that early from first? Thanks for all the help guys.

Why you gotta be like that? Dont you think its punishment enough that I have an automatic, and now you have to rub it in? I have an idea, lets go sit in rush hour traffic, you know the 5mph stop-n-go, stop-n-go for 12 freakin miles and then tell me how good you feel to be a 5 speed.

00 auto here

I ran 15.5 stock at the track and I shifted the car right at 6K, the car then will shift perfectly at 6500 and you should drop your times. Good runs though!

alright guys, ive also been cursed with an auto, but ive also been torque braking to help the launch. my question is wether TBing is better or worse than manually shifting. ive never tried manually shifting because it seems like such a bad idea. also, if i do manually shift, do i have to take my foot off the gas to do it? my friend has a 2001 330i with the fake shifter thingy, and when we raced he used it, but he also grinded some gears because he didnt let off the gas...i dont really fell like doing that (grinding)...oh, and btw, he only beat me by 1 car to 60.

so....TBing or shifting? or both? or new tranny?

Calm down Mike

Check my sig for my time. I was manually shifting to redline each time. I gotta get my launches better and maybe a 15.3 will be in sight

Leave the pedal to the metal. Torque brake and manually shifting. That results in the best times.
