Nice Race with a 2002 TL-S

Here it goes. I finally found one. I raced a 2002 TL-S with Dealer Plates.....He pulled up next to me at the light, I looked over, I knew it was a TL, not sure about the "S" .. So he looked over, and I loooked over...Two sets of HID's gleaming, and we both stepped on it.... I got bad traction on my AUTO... and we were both neck and neck till I hit 3rd.. I took him by a fender ! I am not sure if he was an auto or a six speed......but either way, he looked at me like he saw a ghost after he got beat.... I must admit , those suckers can hang with a Maxx.. Props to the Cl-S !

I am 200 % sure it was TL- S, since I followed him to the next light after I had pul behind him since there was only one turning lane and I had a car cut me off.. !

Nice kill. I would like to race a Bmw 330i. That's what I consider my natural predator! I think they could take us on the highway (one was creeping on my bumper recently & I couldn't pull away). I have eaten an auto GT Stang (00 style) for dinner recently. I didn't like the taste though, cause it wasn't oriental I prefer my food ricey. Where are my fraykin chopstix?

Re: Nice Race with a 2002 TL-S

TL-S only come in auto 5speed right now. Too bad, that would be a good buy as well, but damn, only 6spd in the CL-S.

Actually no 2002 has lost there tranny yet. Only 2001s and under.

I figured the Max might win by a hair, and well, this proved it. IT has more Torque, less weight. The CL-S would be more of a challenge since its about 150 lb lighter than the TL-S.

The 2002 Maxima (auto) vs. 2002 TL-S is a pretty good race as posted by kloogy. I am not surprised about the outcome. Max has more torque and only 5 less hp but weighs less. I think that a 2000-2001 Max and a TL-P would also be a good race. HP is little more for the TL-P (225 vs 222) and Torque is close (216 v 217) but the Max is lighter so would probably win by a little bit.

Booth good cars.

Won't happen!!! 4th gens and 5th gens all years are faster than the TL-S or CL-S! Proven by other members here. lol! If a 2k2 auto can barely take one, explain how these older gens that are slower take them even modded they don't do as good times as the 2k2 autos?!

I have to disagree with you on this one Russ. A friend of mine bought her 2002 TL-S when they first hit the market last June and she dropped her trans last month. A little search on an Acura forum revealed about 30-35 people who have had the same problem with the autos. Thats why I stick with manual, less parts to go bad.

Russ,

WHat are you tlaking about? If kloogy just raced a 2002 TL-S auto with his 2002 Auto Max and it was a close race, is that not proof that the vehilces are close with the Max winning? Unless kloogy is just a real bad driver.

A TL-P is the TL Premimu (non Type S TL).

On the board no one has lost there tranny on a 2002 unlike the 2001s. But people who abuse there trannys will loose them. Most of the ones that died abused there cars. There are many 2001s and 2002s that have over 20-50k of miles on the orginal tranny, no problems. I have 2100 and no problems.

You don't understand, a 190hp 4th gen Maxima and 222hp maxima will win against a TYPE-s PER THEIR STANDARDS.

If a 255hp barely wins, how do those win? lol

#1. If they manual shift their autos properly

#2. If they are 5spds

#3. Out on the highway since Type S auto trannies "blow" after 100 or so.

etc....

Fact is, races with TL-Ses and CL-Ses will be close against Maximas. The win could go either way . . .except with a 2K2 Max. That better win every time. That what makes this kinda race the most fun

As for the 2K1 who beat the TL-S at 90 mph, you exposed a weakness in the Acura 5 speed auto;

1. 4th and 5th gear are over drive gears
2. at above 80 mph, their SS shifter refuses to go down to 3rd gear.

Ya at specific speeds for a short range maybe (probably just over 60mph+. How about 0-110 0-140 0-140

What was your race 65-110 or something like that? Then you let off?

You probably set up the race at specific speeds knowing the power band of the 5spd and your auto. And made sure it ended before or near 110 right?

2 races was from 55~ to 110, the 3rd was from about 65 or so to 130 (I kept in it to 150mph that time), but after I hit 4th gear the pull went to nill, I was still pulling slowly per the max owner, but so slowly the as soon as I hit around 125, vtec kicekd in again, and I pulled to 150.

Please let us know who these .org members are? The year, tranny and mods on their cars. To back up your story.

55mph start on a 5spd Max? Gimme a break! He would be shifting within a second of the start.

Are you trying to say that your car can beat a 5th gen 5spd from 65-130? As for VTEC it does not "kick in" (honda ricer talk) as far as I know but is more of an engine management system.

Your speedo is probably way off as well unless you have GPS system there is no way your car can do 150 stock...NO WAY! I willing to bet your car could not do 150mph unless you were going down a hill with wind on your back.

I have a 2k auto, modded, obviously, and I can beat my friend's 2k1 CL-S from the line and on the highway. The only spot he gets me is just above 30 till about 45 or so since my tranny won't downshift, but I can usually get him by 90-95. Me racing him using the nitrous doesn't really count in this case, although that's just ugly. Too bad he's out in San Diego now. The only thing is, he's stock and I have to have a couple grand in mods to beat him by a half a car. I'm also curious as to whom Russ beat...

Ants97SE the more frequent user on here, the other one I forget his idea, but he is only on here like twice a year or so seriously. hehehe.

Ants97se to what I remember, wheels, CAI, Ypipe, springs, body kit, 5spd
Other guy, Intake, HKS Exhaust, and wheels and 5spd 98.

Sorry obviously you haven't driven a car with alot more power than a 4cyc with vtec. When vtec kicks in on the CL-S the engine completely changes tone and gets much louder, sounds like a CAI all of a sudden. It's not seemless like VVT-i or CVTC. It's like a switch and when it kicks in it will throw you back a bit in the seat. My dad today witnessed it when I took him home from work. Showed him how it worked. 3800 varialble intake switches, 4800 vtec kicks in. There are about 3 pictures already on the forums of 150 speedos. I hit 150, and it was still pulling past it. The car is rated per magazines 148~ mph top speed. Okay, so your maxima can't hit 140 then!!! But my 2k1 maxima also showed 150 once.

It is not accurate, but the most it will be off is 5-8mph at the most.

People with GPS have tested the speedo, and at 100mph it was off by 1.4 mph thats it. Not much.

VTEC is an engine management system of sorts but the valves do engage and thus "kick in" at 4700rpm if i remember correctly so the term is politically correct.

The 2k2 Nissan engines also employ a valve timing and lift control but its effect is not felt as strongly as Honda's VTEC.

If my 5spd Maxima 2k1 barely beat them I seriously DOUBT your AUTO can. He didn't know how to drive that damn car right.
