Isn't that there as a sort of filter or something?

I removed the screen because I had done the same thing on both of my Mustangs. If you blow on your hand and then blow on your hand with the screen in front of it, you can tell it is definately a restriction. From what I hear it is there to straighten the air flow. I have not had these on my mustangs for many years and never had a problem. I took it off more my Maxima more than 2 years ago and have had no problems. There may be some straightening effect with the stock airbox assembly since it has to make an almost 90 degree bend from the opening of the stock air box to the Mass Air Meter. I would think if you have a cone filter, which straightens the air as it comes in, and is a straight shot anyways, you really would not need it.
