AE Horsepower upgrades
#1
Want to keep it (01 AE) pretty stock but increase as much horsepower possible. No engine changes, K & N filter is fine. Anyone out there with the "y" and "b" pipes but kept the stock muffler modifications. Was there an increase in horsepower and if so how much more of an increase and how much larger are the "y" and "b" pipes than the stock. I hope to find someone with simular idea, thanks.

Look at my post (on this page of the forum for now). It is something like Dynos: "5spd 2k Stock v. Intake and Cattman Y and detached exhaust."
Essentially, the y pipe and the stillen intake together add about 12 hp to the wheels on a 2k 5spd. The stillen type intake is the same as JWT's pop charger. Both are cone filters with a velocity stack. Check out the dynos.
The b-pipe was not touched. However, one of the tests Larry and I ran was to disconnect the exhaust after the cat but before the b-pipe. We got only nominal gains (2-3hp). That probably means that changing the b-pipe or the exhaust from the cat-back once you have a y-pipe and intake on a 2k (or a 2k1) is of little value.
Also, I wanted to keep the car relatively quiet, so I just changed the intake and y-pipe.
Since the 2k1 is rated 5 hp more - there may some nominal additional gain - or you may not see as much gain. I suspect that something in the exhaust system was changed to get the additional 5 hp. I've heard it was the muffler but no one has been able to find out for certain yet to my knowledge. For all we know they may have opened up the exhaust somewhere between the engine and the muffler just as we've done with the y-pipe.
Have fun.

I've heard that but I thought that someone found out that the part numbers were the same. Can anyone confirm? Any of you guys with 2ks know anyone with a 2k1 - I'd crawl under there and take a look.
I'm surprised that nissan could get 5 hp out of the muffler alone. But then I also don't think they made up the extra 5 hp either.

Re: Mufflers the same part number.
I concur. I checked this too and the I30, Maxima, and AE all use the same muffler. I will make a special effort to contact Nissan about this mysterious 5 HP this week.
