HID theft reduction 'kit'
HID theft reduction 'kit'
this replaces the 10mm bolts..
these are the bolts you see when you open the hood. This meant to GREATLY increase the time needed to access the bolts. It would take about a minute to install these new bolts (about the same time it takes a thief to steal your lights). Hopefully the stickers would be MOST of the deterrant. Just the fact that you've prepared for them, should make them move on to easier targets. the sad fact is that if they enough time, anything is possible. But wont be a few minute smash and grab job as we have been seeing.
Count me in
I don't really like the idea of the stickers for the windows and I probably won't use them, but the internal warning stickers and the special bolts look nice.
I'm planning on getting a Viper 550 remote start\alarm, so hopefully this won't be a major concern for me, but for $20, why not.

I got a "Protected by 357" sticker somewhere around here. I think that might get my point across.
Another idea?
Tim, have you checked to see if there's a way we could run a cable-lock (from bikes or laptop computers) to secure the headlights to the frame? I know it's not the cleanest idea, but probably a lot more secure. We could loop the cable (probably 1/8-1/16" thick) through a bracket on the headlight, then around a frame of the engine bay. With one laptop cable lock, you should be able to secure both lights and not have too much lack so the cable won't bang around. Just an idea. Cable locks go for $20 I think.
hmmm
Ice: that only works in Texas
Tan: Yes, some people have drilled their housings to run a cable. Or a cable that destroys the ballast when the light is yanked. At that point, your lights are ruined anyway.
Thing here is, they wont be able to remove the bolts. They will have to decide how much time they have. But all they could do is hack saw the brackets. They wont get the bolts loose.

By the way, "Protected by a 357" also works in Arkansas. I've even got a permit issued by the state police that says I can.

I looked for a pager on eBay too, and didn't see any cheaper than around $150. I did a search on "alarm pager". Am I looking in the wrong place?

ok, here's the deal. I need to gauge in interest in a 'kit' to reduce theft on our HID housings.
What I need is about 20 people at $20-$22 to make this work.
would consist of:
5 6mm x 1.0 x 20mm tamperproof torx. (one extra in case you strip one)
1 double side T27 specially keyed double ended bit (again in case you strip one end). Would work in any nut driver/screwdriver or 1/4" socket.

I know it shows a screw, we are getting a metric thread 'bolt', technically a button head screw. this design offers the ability to torque them down well. This design is rounded at resists vice grips. There is another part to this I will share with those who get the 'kit'
4 stickers. Laminate covered vinyl, suitable for automotive use. (still open to suggestions) 2 for affix on the top of the housing or the support member. 1x3 seems like a size that will fit in many locations on the light housing and open areas of the metal beam. the other 2 are small enough for window use.

I am getting ripped on the stickers. $135 for white, $150 for the yellow per 1000.
I am open to designs, what color you think they should be and ANYONE who has a cheaper high quality printer for vinyl labels.
a pack of 100 tamperproof torx is about $70 plus shipping off the net, $100 plus tax locally. Each driver bit is $7 off the net.
Do the math, anything I would make on this after shipping to you would be the result of rounding the numbers.
Who's in? Any ideas?

Tim,
Out of curiosity are these items something I can pick up at my local hardware store? Im interested in doing this because my job requires I take my car to some not so nice places and I would rather ensure the safety of my vehicle and its parts.
please dont take any of this the wrong way, but ...
judging from the picture, it looks like these screws have a 5 or 6 star-type patern with a **** in the middle. I think that this special star with ****/button pattern is easily worked around with a smaller tipped flat head screw driver placed between 2 adjacent star points.
I may be picturing these as something they are not, but if I'm thinking correctly, these were/are used on cable boxes to prevent tampering, so i know they can be worked around
like i said, i could be wrong, but if they are what I'm picturing them to be, don't become too confident
also, a star pattern screw driver can be easily and quickly adapted to address the ****/button thing in the middle as well
but, it still makes a would be thieve take longer to try to steal them, so they will accomplish part of the goal here
just my .02

I don't see the same system. It only paged, no remote start. If I see it again, I'll let you know.
psu max...
there are other patterns.. there's another part to this that I have not mentioned here. you will not turn this screw, especially in a dimly lit parking lot. It is not meant to prevent theft completely. If you want to steal my lights, you're going to need *at least* 20 minutes of not being seen, good light and a Dremel and/or drill. As it is, they can get the lights before you realize that is *your* alarm you hear going off (if it does at all).
remykins: yes, alot of bolt places carry tamperproof stuff, but almost none in sizes metric. By all means, call around. if you find a better price per 100, let us know. my price is mfg direct. dont forget the bit price.

Tim,
Can we order more than the 4 for the kit? I'd like at least 15 of these so I can bolt down all of my stereo equipment and anything else I want to secure a little better. Btw everyone, most insurance policies cover this sort of theft. My agent says I have to pay extra to cover add-ons, but it's not much extra and worth it.

I like the looks of the snake eye screw. That looks pretty damn tamper proof to me. either way I want in. Stickers dont much matter to me. Most people wont take the time to read them anyhow.

If the hood/trunk/any door are opened the dome light/SECU will trigger it.
The zones won't work that way, but for $50? I can make it work.
