Buying SE in 10 days... Questions

Hello All! I am a long time nissan owner with 3 cars under the belt (83 Datsun Maxima/810, 86 300zx, 90 Maxima) After 12 years and 210k on the 90 Max, Its time to take the plunge into realm of the 2k2 6 Speed Max! I do have a couple of questions though:

1) When buying the 6 speed... does the HLSD make that much of a difference?

2) Am i stuck buying current dealer stock because of the 2k3 so near?

3) What is the correct ammount of time to break in a clutch?

4) What is the estimated price i should pay for a Super Black SE, 6 speed, HLSD, and Bose?

Thank you all so much in advance!

I paid about 29000 for every option on a six speed, but this was pre-HLSD. I think the HLSd would help very much from what I have read on this board ... getting around in the snow on the stock tires was a challenge this winter. If I were to do it again I would definately wait for a car with HLSD. And invoice minus the 1000 rebate is what I would start at for a purchase price - you may be able to do better depending on where you live.

Good luck!

I would take it easy on both the engine and the clutch for the first 800-1000 miles ... I figured the longer the better. I'd rather be safe than sorry .. and my clutch still ended up with problems. I will take it easy on the new one for about 1000 miles to be safe.

Now is definitely a good time to get a 02 max. The dealerships are really trying to move them. If they try to tell you they're not, go somewhere else. You'll probably have a easier time if you pick one off the lot (or the dealership does a trade). I have the super black 6spd. I didn't get the HLSD (I wanted it, but I had to pick off the lot) and so far I don't really care. I can imagine it will be a pain in snow, but I don't have to encounter snow where I live.

Good luck!

Thank you all for replying!

I was also wondering... if the HLSD would make any difference in performance?

About the bose, I know its not the best, but perfectly fine for what i listen to. Im a home audio enthusiast so when i need to hear a good song, ill crank it up at home

It seems as though I am going to be able to get the SE, Super Black, with HLSD, and Bose (Which also seeems to come ONLY with a sunroof wtf?) for a about 23,400. Im thinking this is a really good price and should jump on it right away.

Thanx again!

I just replaced my '91 SE 5 speed with a 6 speed HLSD and I can tell you there is a world of difference. Before I had no trouble breaking the tires loose even on dry pavement, sometimes without even trying, and getting out into traffic on wet roads could be a real challenge. Now with the HLSD I haven't broken the tires loose once in 6 weeks, not even on wet roads, but of course I am still breaking it in and babying it. For $399 anyone with a 6 speed would be foolish not to get it.

anyone hear anything on the 2k3 yet?

if i were gonna buy a maxima, i would wait to see what the 2k3 is like, and then make a decision. if its the same, get the 2k2, but if people are right in their predictions, and it is going to have a V8 and RWD, then

slick, brings up a good point...only problem is that by the time they publish what is "new" in the 2003, there may not be much of a 2002 selection left at the dealership (a real Catch-22).

Use search. It will be the 2004 that is different. The 2003 will come out shortly and will be the same car for another half year or so.

If you can find the exact car you want for $23,400 (way under invoice by the way) than jump on it. The '02 selection is dwindling and it's tough if not impossible to find the Bose without Leather and all the other toys for $1500 more.

Only 100 more miles before break-in ends!!!!!! Love it a ton. Just a wind noise issue from the sunroof so far.

FYI - Take the exact 6-speed you are going to buy for a test drive BEFORE signing papers. There's a known problem with the Pilot Shaft Bushing or Bearing on the 6-speeds which requires transmission replacement (do a search in the forum). My friend's 6-speed has 600 miles and the Dealer put in an order for a new tranny already. No issue with mine or most others, but worth the extra precaution.
