Service Engine Light ---> Problem: CAT! AHHHHHH

SO I told you guys like 4 months ago I had that service engine soon light. Well I unplugged the battery and it would stop for a few miles and then turn back on. Well last week I went to a shop and the guy hooked it up to the computer thing and the diagnostics test pointed to the cat being the problem. He said a new cat is like 700.00 omg I just bought tires and i had to borrow money for that. Any tips. Like he said that all its doin as far as bad things are decreasing fuel efficiency and power loss. im not a hardcore racer so like it doesnt bother me too much. ANd if I am forced to get a new cat shoudl I go after market. ALso I know this is stupid but anyway to disable the service engine light its really ticking me off, and i dont wanna take the dash apart cause ill mess it up!

$700???? YIKES!!!!! I think aftermarket cats are cheaper than that, so you might want to look into that option also.

Buy a Random Technology Catalytic Converter from Custommaxima.com:

http://www.custommaxima.com/RandomTech.html

And do NOT permanently disable your CEL.

Wasn't there a TSB about cat error codes and Nissan giving an update to your ECU to correct this? I'm almost 100000% sure i've read that on this forum somplace.

I think is was something like the specs for what the cat sensor readings were are a little to tight. The update gives you more of a span in cat readings before it sets off your CEL light.

Save your money and have Nissan take a look at it first. You may just get a free ECU update.

My CEL was coming on and I took it to the dealer. They downloaded a new ECU program and it has been fine ever since. It was something with the cat.

The cat qualifies as a one of the car's

smog-control equipment which must by law last a loong time....if I'm not mistaken, by law it's required to be warranted for 50k miles...are you past that?

But I thought the cat code was only for Cal spec cars, isn't that what the TSB says?

raynist,

At what mileage did the CEL start coming on for the bad cat? I had the coils replaced at 45k, and I'm at 50k now... and voila! The SES light is back on.

I'm hoping it's something as simple as an ECU "reprogramming", since I'd rather not have the service dept tear into the car (essentially trouble-free for the first 50k.)

Thanks.

It started happening this January (27k??) They fixed it a month ago, and it has not happened since.

I would come on, and then go off after a couple of days, only to come back on a few days later.

YES. Federal warranty which supersedes the Manufacturer warranty on all emissions related issues. 3 years or 50K miles.

I had that on my car, Autotech nissan in NYC charged me $384 for emissions fixes. I called Nissan corporate 1-800-NISSAN1, faxed them the invoice. Autotech Nissan re-imbursed me 2 weeks later.

Call Nissan corporate and they will tell you your rights and warranties.

Federal emissions warranty, including CA, covers the catalytic and PCM (a.k.a. ECU, ECM) for 8 yrs/80k mi. It's inside the "Warranties" booklet that came with the owner's manual.

But the TSB says for CA spec cars only if you have a Fed spec it doesn't give a fix???
