255/45-18

I was thinking about getting this size. Anyone running this tire size on an 18" wheel? Any info would help (ride quality, traction, etc...)

I dont know about the last two, but the S-03s have been nothing but good to everyone, the only bad things i've heard about that tire is
1) Treadwear (but hey, its a soft tire)
2) Expensive
3) Heavy tires. Your rim/tire combo will be HEAVY.

How wide are your wheels? That will dictate what size tires you use. I believe your wheels are 8" correct?, I wouldn't bother with 255s.

Having said that poeple have used 255s on a 4th Gen and said no problems with rubbing. I've also heard of people using 275s which is just silly.

I have 18x8 and I was looking at tirerack, and I believe that you can put these tires on that wide of a wheel. I just wanted to see if anyone was usung them. I just wanted a little more rubber. First I had 235/40-18 and I bumped it up to 245/40. I wanted to bump it up to a 45 series and make them a little wider. Yeah 275 is too much, but I think that I will get a some imrpovement on the ride quality.

Kinda off topic question, but I see you have Eibach.. I assum you have factory shocks... How long have you had our Eibachs and how do they feel with the stock shocks?? I also have a GXE and am interested in getting the Eibachs...

Yeah this is kinda off topic... just kidding...
I do have the factory shocks and I have had them on for a while, I think for about 35,000 miles and they feel like they did the day I put them on. It is a stiffer ride with the Eibachs but its what you can expect from sportier springs. and it handles much better They say that you'll be able to feel when the shocks go b/c the ride will be very bumpy but haven't gotten there yet. Ley me know if you have any other questions...

Def get Bridgestone Potenza S0-3 Pole Position. i have 245/40 18s with the pp and i love them. Best tires i ever bought. I wouldn't bother with 255. 245/40 is the best size for the spedometer anyway. Should be exactly right, and only rubs when turned all the way.

BTW: Nice rims. I almost bought those!

No, no bouncing. I had a VW Golf one time that was dropped on the more agressive Eibach Sportlines. I had them on stocks until they started to bounce nasty. So I know what it feels like, but no, there is no bounce.

flipmode_cali, I also have the 245/40 on 18x8 but I want to go with wider and a touch taller...245/40 to 255/45

what did you go with cwally???????

cwally, I really like your wheels... a lot! I'm thinking about buying those or something similar; what tire size did you decide to go with? Did you upgrade to the 255/45 R18; I use my car to commute around the DC area so I don't want the ride to be too rough; if you did go with the 255/45 R18's, how is the ride compared to your previous setup?

Thanks,

T

would the width of the tire even affect the speedo? it still rotates the same distance whether its 225 or 255, right? the height is what would make that difference. correct me if im wrong.

I believe the rolling diameter is directly affected by any change in section width because the aspect ratio (sidewall height) is a function of the section width. So if you keep the same aspect ratio then the overall diameter is taller for a 255 versus the same ratio on a 225. 255/40 is taller than 225/40 resulting in speedo error.

I have to get tires soon and have not bought them yet but I think I will go with the S-03. I was quoted 155 for the Yokohomas dB but I have heard that they can be noisy and I think I want to go with Z rated. I will let you guys know once I get them. I started 235/40 then went to 245/40 and it was a little smoother so I am thinking it will get better.

Thats strange, I heard that not only are Yokohama AVS dB ZR rated, but they are the quietest preformance tire around based on one tirerack.com experts reviews... Maybe the reviewer was smoking the crack rock? Or maybe your source has sensitive ears???

245/40/18

Well, i have 245/40/18s and the ride is almost like stock 17s, which is pretty comfortable.
Why dont' you switch to H&Rs, that should help the ride quality.
Just a thought.

On the rating according to tirerack the Yokos are WR rated

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Compar...y_545WR8SPC_=4

and I don't know, the reviews show about 65% satisfied, and the other 35% not because of the road noise... And you are right the S-03 are Y Rated... I was thinking about switching to H&R but I loike the drop and handling of the Eibachs, just want tsome more cushion between the road and my wheels.

...Plus technically since your sidewall will get a lil taller your wheel gap will look even smaller! Bonus! Just make sure you use a tire calculator and make sure that it isn't gonna throw your speedo off too much...

...Nah man, I have 1 'little' brother (He's 16, 6'4" and 275lbs plays OL at 5-A high school) but I am not rich! If I was my car would have more mods, and a G35 coupe in the garage next to it starting this fall...

...You know that WR is rated to 168mph and ZR is 149+ right? Which means WR is even better... But that is up to you... I had just heard good things about the Yoko dB and plus it is rated as all-season traction... Which is rare on such a high performance tire...

Tirerack.com, they allow you (when you do a tire search by tire size needed) to specify which speed ratings you want to filter... They classify from the lowest all the way up to s, v, w, y, and z... With MPH ratings... Check it out.

...Its not when it lists the actual tires, it is when you do a tire search and it asks you to enter your size, look down at the bottom of the page, it lets you filter by brand, classification of tire, and speed rating... That should help you narrow your search a lot...

P.S. That sucks about your roadkill experience, I hope you get your car back soon! Peace.

why would you put 255x45R18 tire -your odo readings will be way off, I also have a GXE and run 235x40R18, and I can't imagine putting anything bigger and heavier than that. Not that it'll cost you more to replace the tires and poorer gas mileage, but more wear on your car, decreased acceleration times, and only marginal improvement in acceleration. And I dont think babes really know the difference betwee 255 and 235-wide tire.

The sidewall will be rather large you can run a 255-40 that would be my suggestion...you need a wheel that is 8.5 wide to 9.5 wide...with an offset of 35-39.

...Y'know cwally that is not a bad suggestion, you would get your added width, but also some added sidewall by increasing to 255 but keeping your aspect ratio 40, because 40 ratio is still a taller (slightly) sidewall than a 245 / 40... Think about it. That way, your speedometer isn't like 3 or 4 mph off...

I agree with Y2KMaxGXE-R. I have the same set up as Y2KMaxGXE-R and it just wouldn't make sense to do and upgrade to 255's man! You are talking so much weight and strain on your car. Not to mencion the feedback from y2kse!

Ive got 245/40 R18 Pirelli P 0's and I must say Ive never experienced such handling on a max yet. I can take some pretty damn sharp curves going 80+ mph no prob.

But I'm planning on putting 235/40/18 Faulkens on the front soon and leaving Pirelli's 245/40/18 in the back. Never had Faulkens though...

I hear what you are saying about acc. times and what not, but I think I am more of an all show and no go car.

I think in this scenario, it would give me some added sidewall, but not that much. At least with the 45 I know that I am getting more. I think in my mind I am concerned with knowing I am getting more sidewall.

dude, think of it, chicks will not look in your car's wheelwell to see if you got 255 or 235 etc. Go to ww.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
that way you wont be guessing the correct tire size. With 255 you're prolly looking at 30.
