I got an email from Kumho regarding 225/50/17

unfortunately it was just 'thanks for your interest', but it had been 'CC'-ed to someone else in the company that said "We are getting several of these requests a week"

Thats very encouraging. If you will want Kumhos and havent emailed them yet, please do

info@kumhotech.com

cross your fingers...

KP6,

basically I sent them an email begging them for 225/50/17 so we dont have to buy $200 pilots to get some decent tires.

Something wrong with 235/45/17?

They can be fit on 7" rims and are recommended by manufacturers.......and in Russ's world 245/45 will work also even though not a single manufacturer recommends it.....

I thought 7.5" was recommended rim width for 235/45/17s. 225 was the maximum for 7"

This e-mail not as promising...

I'm sorry we do not make that size or a reasonable substitute, at this time
or for the foreseeable future.

Thanks for considering Kumho tires, FrankS

Subject: Ecsta 712's in a 225/50 17...

Do you have any plans to release this tire? I and MANY of my fellow
Maxima/I30-35 owners would be very interested in being able to put your
tires on our stock wheels (they are only 7" wide rims) and a lot of us do
not want to exceed manufacturer size specs by going to your 235/45 17...

It's been discussed before, and several manufacturers specify 7" to 8.5" wheels for 235 widths. I would search here and show that through specific posts, but that would require effort.

Damn, Bill! I hate to correct a Moderator, but I'm afraid I must.

NO TIRE MANUFACTURER IN THE WORLD will approve the use of 235/45R17 tires on 7.0" wide rims . . . period! And the only acceptable challenge you or anyone else can make to that statement is to PROVE ME WRONG!

Remember, your proof must come from a MANUFACTURER of 235/45R17 tires and it must be in writing. I will not accept a DEALER's word for it, nor should you.

PS: Your statement is not entirely wrong. You can mount 235/50R17 tires on 7.0" wide rims, but NOT 235/45R17s.

PPS: If you search back far enough, you will find posts where I indicated that certain manufacturers approved the use of their 235/45R17 tires on 7.0" wide rims. I contacted those manufacturers personally. In every case, they changed their specifications to 7.5". The reason, of course, was to bring their specifications into compliance with those established the by Tire and Rim Association of America.

I do vaguely recall those discussions. Thanks for doing the leg work and getting the real deal from the manufacturers.

Nevermind my babbling in the previous posts. My new advice for Tim: buy some real wheels.

pauses kicking

What's that Tim? It hurts?!?

returns to kicking

Next you'll be telling me to put some real oil in my car since I'm still using Mobil1.
Actually, I do that every day in the Oil Analysis thread. To summarize:

This analysis illustrates the importance of knowing your driving conditions and catering your oil drain intervals to those conditions. In Tim¡¦s case, better results could be obtained by switching filters at 3,000 miles and using Amsoil or Redline synthetic oils for 6,000 or more miles.

These oils are better formulated than Mobile 1 oils are simply due to the fact that Mobile 1 has recently changed their additive package due to pressures from the car makers, while Amsoil and Redline are not marketed on that broad of a scale and their sales do not depend as much on the car makers. Therefore, their additive packages tend to allow the oil to go longer.

If Tim would only listen to me.......I would stop kicking.

That appears to be the canned response, jjs. I just received the same response to my inquiry.

Not like I wasn't expecting the corporate speak party line, just hoping for something similar to Tim's exchange to see if this was a 'feeling' at Kumho or not...

Oh well...

Bill, what driving conditions would warrant that recommendation?

City? Hwy? Combo hwy/city? Cold temps? Hot temps?

Sorry it's OT, but curious.

I dont know guys. I'm not real happy with my Kumho 712s. They are light years ahead of the RE92s and other junk, but they haven't quite lived up to the hype. After only two auto-x events in them, they are showing very significant signs of wear. Now I realize that no tire can survive some intense autocrossing unscathed, its just that the 712s aren't he miracle tires people make them out to be. For the price....maybe. Overall.....no. I'm thinking about the Pilot Sports.
