40 vs. 45 series tire

I have a set of MM Evo 17x8 rims and need tires. What would be the difference visually between a 235/40 and 235/45 tire. Will the sidewall be too thin with the 40. I dont plan on dropping the car. Maybe I should just go with the 45...please help.

Yes they will both work due to the 8" rim.I would go with the 45's in order to keep the speedo and odomoter about the same. With the 45's you will only be 1.2mph off but with 40's it will be 2 or 3.Hope this helps and good luck. What tires are you going to get?Im leaning towards Kumho 712's supras but cant decide on rims.Too many choices.

Of the two choices, I would choose...

the 235/45 for sure. I had 235/40's on my 17x8 rims and could not believe the difference in compliance between the two sizes. The 235/45 was much more comfortable and also much more quiet. For what it's worth, you may also consider 245/45 tires. They'll be even closer to the original 225/50 tire size in overall diameter resulting in less speedometer error. They'll also put more rubber on the road and be at least as comfortable as the 235/45 tires. That size in a Kumho 712 is only $2 more per tire at TireRack than the 235/45 of the same make. It also fits your 8" rim without a problem (rated for 7.5-9" rims). That's what I plan to buy when I wear out my current set of 712's. Good luck.

Yeah go 245

Get 245/45/17's, you have an 8" rim, fill that biatch out. If you get 40 series tires you will have even more of that unsightly wheel gap. Are you looking for an all season tire? if so your choices just got smaller. What kind of money are you interested in spending? I have the Potenza RE950's and love them, the only drawback is their speed rating, but I wanted an all season.
