Anything is possible ...but it seems expensive. Most car companies (and traditionally Nissan too) will use a car platform at least 5 years. The 4th Gen Maxima went 5 years and the 3rd Gen Max went 6 !! I will believe this total redesign of the Maxima in 2003 when I see it.
I think you are right. BUT - I was reading the news forums regarding the Infiniti division. It seems infiniti is stepping up to the plate with some serious performance vehicles. 2002 Q45 is rumored to be an M5 competitor. Also coming out with a high performance XVL (I think - I don't recognize that vehicle though). Who knows, maybe this will carry over to Nissan with the re-emergence of the Z. They could certainly sell the current Maxima with a 3.5 in it, some cross drilled rotors and a more performance oriented suspension. Hell, it is already competitive with the pre-2000 M3. (MadMax2k raced one at the track in his 2k 5spd with CAI and Ypipe, and they were dead heat in the 1/4 and beyond). I'd get one in a heartbeat.

Again, I just can't believe that Nissan will totally redesign the Maxima in 2003...only useing the current body 3 years!! I will have to see it, to believe it.
Well... if the car does NOT get heavier, it will be HOT.. (i mean, same body, but a sizeable boost in BHP/Engine displacement)
The year after that, however, as they move up to full-size, it HAS TO GET HEAVIER... Big time...
(if you ask me, these are all just rumors as of now... it seems improbable that they would ditch this body design after 3 years.. But then, I heard that they internally intend to move the Max up a notch, and replace the gap that is left with the Altima... (ie.. larger V6 Altimas)

About the timeframe issue... Yeah it is hard for me to believe too, but keep in mind what they did with the Frontier after only 1 year.. They flopped from 1 new design to the next..

true
it's the rumors like this that kept me from buying a 2k1. Waiting for the 250hp. But if they resize it i'll probably buy elsewhere. I love the maxima's size, and with a bigger engine (2002 maybe?) it will be one nice car.

I would look for the Altima to maybe get a V6 option (mabe standard?) and it might be the current Max 3.0 L engine. The Altima is supposedly going to come standard with the 2.5 L coming up for the rumored Sentra SE-R. Tired of rumors.
I have even heard that the 3.5L engine might only come on the SE (not sure about the GLE).
Just opinion and rumor......We will have to wait and see. The 2002 3.5L Max sounds like it will be hot!!
02 max
There's a guy called Joenissan on the Edmunds Maxima board that has been a Nissan technician for about 20 years. He says that you can't tell what they are going to do in the next couple of years and that Nissan rarely does what 'they' say. So I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Do keep this in mind...
If you stay up with current events you'll remenber that Nissan has merged with Renalt overseas and that a lot of changes are coming down the pipes, like...
1. Nissan understands that their more conservative stand in the USA as far as choices really helped Lexus with becoming the american choice for premium autos in the luxury division.
2. Infiniti owes the public a lot for it lack-luster lineup of vehicles, so you can look for 3 new cars from them to be added to the not-so-hot lineup, including the XVL model which is a rear-wheel driven car that will memick the lexus 430 front end as for as the headlight positioning.
3. Maxima, Altima and sentra will get significant power plant changes within the next 5 years according to insider info in Japan, starting in the year 2000. what model year, we will just have to see. At the same time Renalt will be launching new vehicles to places outside of the US before it jumps back into the car market in the states.
