Muffler shop said I could add 25hp with a muffler!!!

Well I thought I had gotten over the mod thing after I lowered the car, but now I think I want to here my exhaust. I called a couple of muffler shops today and one Jack@ss told me that if I put the DTM style SS muffler on I would gain like 25hp!!! I thought is was funny and then I began to feed into his selling attempt. After about 5 minutes the guy told my that if I really wanted power, he could do a 3" Header back exhaust and it would add between 40-50hp!!!!!

I then called another muffler shop, and got another Jack@ss!! I asked "do you carry the magnaflow SS mufflers" and he said yep. So I go down there and the guys tryin to sell me some Ravin muffler!! I asked him "so where is the magnaflow" (turns out they don't carry magnaflow, and he just said that to get me down there). He tells me that the ravin is much better and its SS. At this point I decide to find out how much the ravin muffler is and he tells me the muffler alone is $350, and with labor the total would be $500 for the system( we aren't talkin cat-back, this is just muffler section)!! His last comment was "well, you have an import and they are expensive to modify!"

I hate people that try to act smart and spout off false facts. Luckily I worship and study cars, but every time I go to a dealership they always try to tell me something so I mess around with them. Like the guy up at the Nissan dealership who tried to tell me that the Maxima's transmission was a tiptronic straight out of Porsche and that it was quicker than the 6 speed. I told him that it was just a gated shifter and you can't select your gears, he gave me a snub and I just smiled. Or the lady that tried to sell me a 96 BMW 3 series hatch back for 18500 with the lil four cyl. engine makes like 110hp and she said it would burn any Maxima anyday, just don't tell your dad that wink wink. When my dad asked about the new Z the guy tried to tell me that the new Z was the reason that Chevy came out with the Z06 Corvette and Ford boosted the SVT Mustang cause they didn't want Nissan to have a faster car than the Americans. He made it sound like such a conspiracy theory.
It just ****es me off whenever someone who could have such an easy job as selling a car that has usually more or just as much hp and features for less money. Look you got a car that is fast, luxurious, sporty, and has an awesome price. You don't need to try and impress people with your false facts to try and get people to buy your car.
Thank you

Not to mention this Ravin muffler looked like a generic SS knock off that you could buy on ebay for like $50 bucks!!

I was actually suprised he didn't try to sell me a Flowmaster!!

It's those kind of mechanics

that put a bad name to all the good ones out there.

I think state laws should require at least a GED to be a mechanic. That will prevent all the stupid ones from ripping the public.

25hp from a muffler?

$500 for a muffler and installation?

Do these guys have anything that even remotely resembles conscious?

I have had them on my v8's for years, I actually love them. I was just stating that this was clearly an American made car type muffler shop. Lots of pick ups and mustangs, and was reflected by his comment about foreign cars are expensive to modify.

My car has a y-pipe, racing cat and full cat-back exhaust and my gain was probably somewhere around 30hp. Don't beleive everything these idiots tell you. To make you feel better, and myself feel worse, my catback, racing cat and y-pipe cost me a total of 900 bucks. But it was worth it for the look, sound and power. Good luck.

Unless you've got before and after dynos to prove it, that figure may be a little optimistic, maxse01. I also have a Y-pipe, racing cat and full cat-back exhaust, and I figure my gain at somewhere between 15 to 20 hp. But if you can actually prove that you got 30 hp out of your setup, I'll be happy to revise my estimates upward.

I have set up a dyno appointment for june, so i am hoping to put down at least 220fwhp from all those mods, plus i have a ecu upgrade that was probably good for 10hp. A racing cat is a hi flow catalytic converter. I will post my results as soon as i get them.

I totally agree with you... I've never met a salesman who is into cars yet.... funny, I guess it is easier to brainwash the average joe into telling people bogus things... heck this one subaru sales guy didn't even know the is300 was a rwd car... he even said the suby wrx had a boxter's engine... I corrected him with "boxer" engine and he said oh, and changed the subject to something else... one nissan guy went on and on spitting out all the stuff about the maxima se 6spd i test drove and 75% of what he said was crap. i didn't buy the max at his place cause the color was that teal and the car had like 150+ miles on it already... it was the only 6spd on the lot... he kept insisting me to buy the automagic icelandic pearl that was like 30k... i said see ya....went to another dealer a few miles down the road and found my sterling mist 6spd se...

Damn, stupid people just want business, ask him if he'll put his money where his mouth is on that one... Tell him that if you get 25HP out of the muffler, you'll pay him 2X the price of the muffler and if it doesn't, you get it for free.... See what he says then! What would be funny is if he actually took the bet

I don't think I'll ever understand that...how can you sell something that you don't believe in...or explain how it works when you have no idea?

You should be able to get a full catback, for under $200.00, without the muffler. I got my muffler on Ebay for 90.00 with shipping. It sells for almost $300 at online shops.... Dont ever believe what any dork at a shop tells you, they think you're a ricer, that can be coninced a Matrix filter gives him 20HP....Just use common sense..

I thought be replacing the modern three way Cat converter won't actually give you any HP gain????? this has been proved by dyno. Unless you have force induction and upgrade the Cat to 3", then you will probably get some nice gain out of it.

The funny thing about this is that I wasn't looking for any power gains!! I know that the 00' muffler is very efficient and replacing it often yeilds very minimal gains, but I want to be able to here my exhaust so I am going to change it.

I suspect you're probably right, MaxTuner. Whatever gains you get by installing a hi-flow cat are minimal at best. But then installing an entire catback system produces minimal gains. And look at what people are willing to spend on that.

Strictly from a performance standpoint, I think you'd probably want to replace your Y-pipe first, then your catback system, then your catalytic converter.

I think I am going to go with a Magnaflow with some nice 21/2" or 3" rolled tips. I tried to pull up Kloogy's sound clip of the powertech, but my ghetto 3yr old computer takes forever to upload the sound bite, then tells me I don't have the correct software!!!
