Dual exhaust on 2k2 Maxima

Has anyone put dual exhaust on his or her 5gen Maxima? Some of the Altima 3.5 models have this option.

Would there be a benefit to performance? Can you get the rear valance that would have the dual cutouts?

I hear everyone talking about y-pipe change outs but nothing looks sportier then dual exhaust. Most of all does anyone have any interest in a dual exhaust system for their 2k2 Maxima?

There is a 4th gen guys that have a dual exhaust set-up, but I would say it is purely cosmetic, some say you loose back pressure. I guess with a turbo or S/C there might be benefit going dual by having better output. I'm looking at making a dual set-up on my 2K1 next winter when the car will be sleeping in the garage, I dont care much about back pressure and minor performance lost it will be purely for the look.

Cheers

People want Y pipes because on previous gen Maxima's, they have been the part of the exaust that was by far the most restrictive.

A dual exaust on the other hand is just for looks.

Yeah but its a 2-1-2 design. Not what I would call a true dual exhaust. I would say its mostly cosmetic. BUT...why the extra cost to produce for cosmetics?

i once inquired about this mod... and asked a muffler shop if they could fabricate a TRUE dual exhaust for me. They took a look at my car and said that it is possible if i give up my spare tire well... i still dunno if it IS indeed possible because of all the wires, sensors, etc. but what the guy said was that i could use 2 catyltic converters and place one behind the the other in that groove under the car. with two 2.5" pipes coming out of the exhaust manifold, eliminating the need for the Y-pipe...

personally i dont think it can be done

but any thoughts on this?

Sure, anything can be done if you want to pay for it. And you want to deal with the job this guy does.

Also, I hear that a true dual exaust, without an H pipe on a V6 sounds funny. Like two 3 cylinder engines.

You answered your own question...it looks tight. Why else do people get bodykits, spoilers, chrome rims, clear corners, etc...

BTW I think dual exhausts look the best...but if they make you lose more than a couple hp, then I prob wouldn't do it.

I think the best looking dual exhaust setup on a 2k2 would be a mustang GT/camaro style setup. Those big chrome edged pipes coming out of either side of the bumper w/o any bumper cutting would look soo tight IMHO.

Craigmack: Your dual exhaust doesn't look too bad either. I read in another thread how you painted the can. Do you have more pics of it from other angles?

Ya I painted the front face of the muffler black to make it 100% invisible from any angle. It blends perfectly underneathe my black car. The setup looks like straight pipes, which is what I was shooting for.

Here's some other shots:

All those pics are rather old, I wish I could take more of a side shot b/c my car looks different now with the Clee rear emblem, 5% tint, body work and radio shack stubby black antenna. Oh well, lazyness is a bish. I'll probubly take sommore after I get the rest of my $tealin' body kit put on.

for a NA car..it's more cosmetic...but if you go with SC or turbo, it can help u lessen the back pressure.
