Automatic Trans. Questions

Automatic Trans. Questions
I have a 2K2 automagic, tragic, pelagic, whatever you may call it. However, I get bored when I'm not in traffic around LA, which is rare, and like to start in 2, upshift to 3, and if I pick up enough speed, go to D. Is this bad for the car? Should I be leaving it in D more often? I'd say I do this about 20% of the time.... Just searching for opinions on the subject. No high RPMS though, I shift through just like I'd do on my old manual tranny. Thanks for the input!

If i'm not mistaken, leaving it in 2 will actually make you start at 2nd gear (bypassing 1st gear). I could be wrong on this one though.
In any case, manually shifting it shouldn't be bad at all given you're just telling the computer when you want to shift. It's not any worse than just smashing on the pedal hoping for the ECU to figure out that you want to downshift.
In city driving i normally leave it in 3rd and slide to D when the coast is clear. For highways, upon entering i leave it at 3 and once cruising i slide to D. Goes back to 3 when passing.
Read up other stuff i posted here

I don't know about other years, but on my 2K2, 2 uses both gears 1 and 2, unless I'm going crazy. There is a shift that takes place once when I leave it in two. Thanks for the rest of the input though, I feel better now.

Ford AT's do that. Others might too, but I haven't owned one of those...

Good for slippery starts, like in snow.

My Accord V6 started in 2nd when you put it in 2. Annoying as hell in traffic when you want 1 AND 2 but just don't want it to go up to 3rd.
It was helpful in the snow, though

when u manual shift an auto, u actually force a gear to pop into another....where as manual has clutch to separate the gears and put it back when u let it go.
so is it bad if u manual shift an auto? I think so...

That makes some sense, well actually it doesn't. Shouldn't me moving the gearshift from 2 - 3 just shift up like it would if the computer told it to? I could understand downshifting into 2 or 1 being a problem, but I only upshift from 2 - 3 - D and sometimes down from D - 3. Anyone else, I'd really like to figure this out before I do damage to my ride.

How funny...I do the same thing as well and I was always curious on that shifting crap. When I'm bored on the street, I usually upshift manually 2-3-D. I never downshift though. Then somtimes I go from D-3 or 3-D. I am also curious if this damages your tranny or anything vital, cause if it does, then I better stop doing it. Any experts here to tell us?

Re: Automatic Trans. Questions
I do the same thing. I raced few times when I shifted from 1 to 2 and I get a jerk. Same thing from 2 to 3 but not as much. I dont think that this is good for the tranny but I only do it when racing other cars.

But that's the reason I do it... I want to keep the tranny in a lower gear entering a corner, when I'm off throttle, braking and the TCM would say "up shift". I want the lower gear and higher engine speed to accelerate out of the corner without waiting for the down shift as the throttle is mashed. Doesn't a 2k2 have a gated shifter to make manual shifting easier? I really wish my 2k1 did.
When you shift an auto you aren't actually meshing gears like a manual gear box, you're basically signaling the transmission it's OK to start a shift. If the TCM agrees, i.e., engine speed and throttle position is right, then it will shift the transmission by actuating solenoids in the valve body. If it doesn't agree, it won't shift.
