Nice run with the Mustang GT...

I was coming home just now and see this old body style Mustang driving in front of me in the other lane, I come closer and see it is a Mustang GT.
I am at his rear bumper now and I see him look over at my car floor it. So I was like lets go, I drop into 3rd and FrankenCar intake comes alive. I started to pull on him right away, I had about a car length on him by the end of the 3rd gear, shifted to 4th and kept pulling. He had his window open as I was pulling past him and I glanced to see look on his face when he heard the mad roar of FrankenCar intake.

How was fast are those Mustang GTs anyways?

I owned a Stang that ran 12's. Dont be too excited. Racing a Mustang can be a roll of a dice. He's either hooked up, or stock with a slushy AOD, with rusty exhaust... Be carefull what Stang you mess with !

mustangs and dice

True. I don't see many 5.0's anymore. Those guys I respect. There are so many cheap mods they can get for their cars it's not even funny. But the newer versions just stink. Unless they dump $35k in a Cobra or other modified style, they just don't have the top end. Going up Hwy 50 near Placerville, the only thing I need to do is drop to 3rd and it's all over.

Don't have top end? Thats funny my 00' GT I traded for the max ran 13.9 @ 100 mph with an x-pipe and flowmasters! Seems like it had some type of top end to run 100mph in the 1/4! Not to mention that the N20 kit I was going to get would have put me up in the high 100's (107-108) and that mod would have cost me like $600.

Not tryin' to flame here, but c'mon guys we aren't going to be able to run with mustangs!

Yeah I know some of the Mustangs can be very fast, but it was fun to see the look an his face when I pulled past him.. hehe

He had some sort of the exhaust, sounded pretty mean when he took off, flowmaster I think. At least that is what I usually see on all the Mustangs.

What does Mustang GT run, like mid 14s right?

If it was an automatic, it could be more like mid/high 15's.

Most automatic GT's (87-93) came with 2.73 rear end gears. They are horribly slow off the line (my wife has one, I have a 12 sec 89 GT) and do not really come alive until about 30-35 mph. They are so undergeared that they can barely get a chirp of the tires from a stop, although they do get great gas mileage on the highway, I once got 34mpg in my wifes car on the flat highways of Florida. Also the torque converter stall speed is only about 1800 rpms. With a higher stall converter and 3.73 rear gears, they will run low 14's (automatic). A 5 speed with just 3.55 rear gears will run high 13's, with 3.08's they should run mid 14's.

The 5.0 runs out of breath on the freeway if it is stock. I have had my 5.0 to 143 MPH... I honestly don't think it had much more (and it was dang scarey at that speed). My car has 3.55 gears so it is a blast off the line til about 75.......... then things are less dramatic. I will agree with other people here... Beware of which Mustang you mess with.

If you pull up to a stang and see a little snake symbol...

...DON't push your luck! Yeah, it may just be a GT guy that got his hands on the Cobra emblem (I think that you should have to prove that you have a Cobra to be able to buy those emblems...WAY too many people that like to pretend) or it may be a guy (or gal!) that has 300-330hp (390 in 2003)and knows how to use it!. I speak from experience, I JUST traded my 98 cobra in last week and they can really embarrass alot of cars out there...

Unless of course you have a supercharger bolted on to your Max of course, then by all means kill, kill, kill...

Kill Kill Kill

oooh...I've thought about a supercharger, but now there might be a turbo available. (2001AE)I'm torn between the 2. I can probably get a way with spending $4k without my wife killing me. I know the kits cost about that much. But that leaves me stuck installing it. I know there will be other things I need to buy, upgrade, and tune with either one. I wish I had an good hard dollar amount before I get my hopes too high.

You are 100 % right . My stang was originally an AOD. I put 4.10 gears in it to wake it up, but in order to hit the 12's I dropped a Tremec T5 in it. Be carefull what you wish for. I can get any stock 89-93 5.0 LX 5 speed to run a high 14 stock ! I guarantee it . I know how to powershift those bad boys. I worked on 5.0's since 89 ! Anyone with a brain can dump 5K or less just to run 12's....As far as top end goes, if you run 3.55 gears, you will have top end ! I never trapped lower than 102 MPH ! I ran my Max and trapped 93.33 .... Dont bash the Stang. Its the biggest bang for the buck ever made... And to all you " I'll beat it in the twisties crap".. I had a full BBK, KONI suspension.....

I just try to stay away from the modded and blown 1999+ Saleens, have destroyed every other Mustang I have seen in Vegas. There is a blown Saleen with more boost and other mods, I have been told to stay away from, talked to the guy for a while......how does 425 at the wheels sound? Ummmm......way out of my league right now, I am about 310 at the wheels.

Oh ya this is the Maxima site....JK I don't feel confident racing anything in the Maxima. Cars are just getting too fast 222 just doesn't cut it.

Boy the G35 coupe sounds really nice right now!!!!! 6 speed, 275 hp and 4 wheel independant suspension, now we are talking. Did they say 6 speed in the sedan later this year???

Even in a 2K2 you must chose your battles, and being a former V8 owner, I know my limitations !

Yeah but stock GTs are not that fast I don't think. At least I did pull him pretty easy. He did have flowmaster exhaust I think. That thing was pretty loud.

Re: Nice run with the Mustang GT...

what year was it?
The new GT's would probably take off on you, I hava a friend that did a 13.9 1/4, that is stock with 260 hp. Its a V8, rear wheel drive and more torque than maxima. 2k2 would probably keep up with him pretty well

It was two generations old I think 5.0 Mustang GT. And we raced from 50mph on, so it was a rolling start.. off the line I think he would take me.

But I loved seeing face of the driver when I pulled passed him. I had about 3-4 car lengths by the time we shut it down.
