gxe = base model. look for ugly rims j/k all gxe'ers
gle = lux edition. 5 spoke rims (if i can remember correctly) softer ride, slightly higher ride height than se.
se = sport edition. sport tuned suspension, 6 spoke rims
ae = anniversary edition. note cool body kit and 6 spoke rims
easiest way to identify these models: race one with a civic or the such. You will have an easy view of the trunklid for a few seconds
cheers!

you can easily tell the SEs from the GLE and GXE because the door handles on an SE are the same color as the car but the handles on the GLE and GXE are chrome. and the tail lights on an SE have a carbn fiber trim whereas the GLE and GXE both have an all red tail light.
ive never been able to tell a GLE from a GXE on the road though until 2002 since they have different rims now.

To learn more about...
specific differences, try using www.nissandriven.com to 'build your own' of each car and note the different packages, contents, etc.
Granted, this will be for a 2002, but at least it will give a fairly good idea of how the trim levels have differed.

The reason I ask is because I just bought a 2001 max and it doesnt say GXE, GLE etc on the back of it.
It does have the crome door handles and trim so I imagine it is the GLE.
Thanks again!

All red tailights and chrome door handles will tell you it's NOT a SE.
Black tailights mean it's a SE or an AE, but you'll know the AE by the ground effects, polished rims, and dark trim headlights.
The rim styles and a badge on the trunk will help tell whether it is a GXE or a GLE. The GXE doesn't have a G_X_E on the trunk, but the GLE has a G_L_E.
If it's a manual it's a GXE or SE, since the GLE only comes in automatic.
