When I got my SE it had 50 miles on the odometer. I was told it was a dealer swop. You can go to a dealer and ask to test drive any specific car. The old distinction between "new", that is, just off the truck, and "demo", seams no more. How many miles is acceptable as "new"? Is it fair thar cars with 350 miles are sold as new?

It's all opinions here. My new is anything under something reasonable. My definition of new is anything under 500, but I would prefer to buy a car under 10 miles. What do you guys/gals think?

My definition of new is when the car has 10 miles or under. When I test drove my Max it was like 3 or 4 miles on the odomoter. On the day I picked it up, it was somewhere between 8-11 miles on the odo.

I have to agree.

Anything too much over the 50 or so mark is giving to the possibiity that someone drove the crap out of it. Such as ....flooring the engine while it's still cold.

I remember going to a Nissan dealer one time and I saw one of the salespeople drive the dealer's 20th AE Max. He just started the car and took off faster than anything. At least give it a 30 second idle. I was talking to another salesman at that time and he says, "oh yeah, he uses the car everyday and takes off like that all the time." Damn, I feel bad for the person who plans on buying that one.

I think anything above 50 miles is too much. Mine had 10 miles on it when I bought it.

From my experience...

as a new car salesperson, we were told that anything new had to be under 100 miles. So, if a customer took a car and drove it past 100 miles (Although it had been driven before) that the car was to be sold as DEMO. But that was at Isuzu and Lincoln dealership here in Georgia. It is possible that this could be different in other states.

sales people don't give a crap about the cars they test drive. I'm not shy to tell them to chill and when they start the car, I tell em right B4 they put it in gear, Turn the damn radio off and U hit the throttle hard once and I'm not buying this car. I got my car with 4 miles on it and my sales person was cool, he just handed me the keys and told me to go test drive it and make sure everything was Ok. didn't even come sit with me. I went around the block and came right back. I look at it this way, when U R serious about buying a car, don't need to drive it for miles to see if the wheels are turning the right direction. just got a 2001 sentra SE for my Nephew and the sales guy was some young punk, and I told him take the car off the dealer lot and park it, I'll take it from there. seems like they like to blast the radio and like to look cool infront of customers. I wanna hear the damn car not the radio.

Saw a 2K max at the dealer with 6000miles and the dealer was still selling that **** as new. All the local nissan dealers are thief around here. I got my car 400miles away. **** smith nissan. Columbia South Carolina http://www.****smith.com cool guys and will almost always sell the car at dealer invoice. call um tell um I like this car and wanna buy, they'll clean it for U have the paperword ready, all U gotta do is sign and drive. Also I never finance from a dealer. go through my own credit union. or better Yet something I've learned. If U have a check from a bank. and nissan is offering better rates. U can haggle on that and see if the dealer will fall for it. but again set the price first. just some things I've learned after buying about a dozen cars or so. well 1/2 dozen for me and the rest for family members

This reminds me of a test drive in an Acura Integra GSR I had a few years ago. The salesman took me out for a quick spin through a nearby *residential* area. We hadn't been driving for 60 seconds (the engine was still cold) when the guy suddenly down-shifted and nailed it at WOT. He rowed through a couple gears at red-line (8500rpm) until we were at about 80 mph+. At that point, the salesman asks, "How about *that* acceleration?!" I growl, "I can't comment. I was too busy helping you watch for kids." It was a pretty quiet ride back to the dealership... What a jerk.

Depends on who you ask when defining "new". I've been in the auto sales/financing business for about 7 years. You guys are right, the salesmen, lot guys etc. burn rubber every chance they get. I bought my MAX with 8 miles on it. I insisted seeing the car with the plastic still on it. In finance , we consider anything with under 2,500 miles on it brand new. Here's my advice..NEVER BUY A DEALER DEMO and pay new for it!!

Was looking at an AE last weekend.

It was gorgeous and all. They of course were playing all the games, telling me how hot it was and what a collector's item it'd be and how it'd hold its value. It was a fully loaded stick and they wanted like 31k for it plus they wanted to screw me on my trade-in (my 2k auto se, I was really in for service that day). Anyway back to the topic, the car had some 350+ miles on it. Hard to believe a car that hot wouldn't be sold already. It was fun watching them yank my chain.
