SE test MotorTrend, January 04

The SE posted these numbers
AT (5speed): 0-60: 6.6 sec; 1/4 mile: 14.91@95.26
Manual (6 speed): 0-60: 6.3 sec; 1/4 mile: 14.77@96.69

By the way the Acura TL (6 speed) did:
0-60: 6.1 sec; 1/4 mile: 14.44@98.17

Motor Trend Car of the year is: Toyota Prius!.
I thought the TL would win.
Greetings

those numbers are fairly accurate. trap speeds look right on, times could be improved by a better driver/better track. That TL is pretty quick too

I think that prius deserved it.... it seems everyone is trying to push more power out of their car and make it better handling and quicker... it makes sense the the prius won because not everyone wants a fast car... some people want a car thats reliable and a "dont worry often" car.... people dont have to worry about gas and oil changes so often... its kinda cool I think.

Humm

With Ga2000 getting 14.6mon the 1/4 and me getting 14.88 (weighing 250 ) in an auto, this means that the auto is pretty quick.

Hats off to the TL, Acura really knows how to gear thier cars. I wonder if it's modable. They may have sucked the last drop of power out of that engine to get it to that point. Acura never puts large rims and tires on thier cars, I'm curious how much they wiegh now.

Luck for us Nissan has corked zzzbiatch up with heavy 18" rims.

If ga2000 is correct about possibly getting 14.4~ in a stock auto next year, what happens when we on cork her.

my friend just got a 04 tl auto.. its fast but no faster than my bro's 03 cl type s.. and my brothers best run with intake is a 14.69 and my"so far" hopefully i go again, best with the max is a 14.64 bone stock. i think the 04 max auto now is good for a 14.4 in cooler weather.. so the stick should be faster than the 14.4 or just as fast as the 04 tl 6spd.. is this motertrend out yet on news stands?

It will be interesting when you/we go back to the track. I may put light rims and tires on my and also do the intake and exhuast.

I guess we can use the Z as a bench mark for potiental HP after mods

Does that mean the TL is good for a 14.2 in cooler weather?

I figured the TL estimated 1/4 time (C/D) of 14.7 seconds for the 6sp seemed high. Ironically, I believe the Accord 6sp coupe is still quicker/faster.

Anyway, the Prius rocks!! It deserves the MT COY honors. If I had to commute by car everyday, damn straight I'd buy the Prius.

Peace.

Can't necessarily trust mag times, but doesn't that make the 04 slower than the 02-03? Of course, I haven't been paying attention, so maybe that's not news...?

C/D had the 2003 Maxima SE 6sp with a 14.7sec ET also.

Auto ... 14.88. I now factor my weight in when comparing because everyone says 100lbs is signficant (I average 245 - 250). So I will have to do the rim tire package to drop weight and rotating mass weight.

Has anyone done a real documented test on rim/tire wieght? I read one post on this wrx site that said they gained .2 - .4 on 0-60 and 1/4 with just a 5 pound weight reduction, but the mass was also distrubted differently I believe it was 15" and 17".

I really believe we can get 300HP (crank) out of the Max.

Tl got 0-60 in 5.7 but dissed for torque steer and lacking in sport compared to it's RWD competition.

The TL is now a 6 sec flat car when u average the magazines out.

Okay - but didn't they have it 0-60 in 6.0 flat? Interesting - all else being equal (it's probably not), the 5th gens may have more torque, and the 6th gens may actually have the advertised horsepower...

F23, I'm not aware that C/D ran performance tests of an '03 6 speed Max. C/D did however run the '02 (and '04):
Per Autosite:
2002 SE Sdn C&D Oct-02 3.5 V-6/6M
0-60, s. 6.00
70-0 Braking, ft. 182.00
1/4 Mile, s. 14.70

2004 SE Sdn C&D Mar-03 3.5 V-6/6M
0-60, s. 6.40
70-0 Braking, ft. 197.00
1/4 Mile, s. 15.00

it just varies from magazine to magazine... some car times also may depend on break in period.

Everyone quickly forgets that MT does correct thier times to standard atmosphere (sea level) and 50 degrees. They run with a full tank of gas, 30lbs of test gear, and nothing removed from the car. Most importantly, the trap speeds they post ARE NOT representative of what you'll see at a 1/4 mile track because they don't test on a true 1/4 mile track. The trap speeds they post are the true ending MPH, not the last 60' averaged MPH like you'll see at the track. Their trap speeds are typically 2mph faster than you'll see that the track.

If we all corrected our ETs/MPHs to standard atmosphere, temp, and used the true ending 1/4 mph, we'd have some significantly quicker and faster Maximas in here. Correcting my ET/MPH for altitude (1100', 70 degrees) and conditions, and the final ending MPH would mean I run 14.12@ almost 102mph with a weak 2.20 60'

How "funny" is it that now the Acura guys have to deal with reviews that talk about the "dreaded torque steer"? See, we're not alone!

I can not wait to meet a TL at the track.

If those numbers are spot on, then they are saying this car can beat/ match a 350Z.

Real track times will tell the tale. I have about 4+ months to wait, mods may be on it at this time so it will not be apples to apples anymore.

If he / she spanks me, I will take it like a man.

Yeah, thats the best thing, we in our v6s can hand some a$$es for those in v8s... Ive beat some unmodded 5.0 mustangs because they were too cocky.... as soon as my 2nd gear hit, i was gone........ 3rd gear is where i pulled 3 car lengths....

Yes, the srt is fast. I will look back at some of my time sheets. This guy in a srt was running mid 13's all day at ~104+MPH.
