Check Engine light on a 2K SE
I have a 2K that the check engine light started coming on a while back and truly never had it checked out since the car posed no other problems whatsoever. Finally last December the car stareted dying on me at stop signs and red lights and it finally started to concern me. Had it checked out and was told that it needed the o2 sensor for bank 1. Had it replaced last week and the problem was not resolved. Took it a local Nissan dealership and they told me that the entire catback had to be replaced since I have a y-pipe and it had an afteramarket catallytiv converter(at the cost of nearly $1,000). Of course I told them to **** off but paid and left. However, they never gave me a computer printout of the analysis. I went to a local muffler shop and had the converter replaced and the problem is sill there. The car still dies at about every other stop light and I don't know what to do. Anyone had these problem and what do you folks suggest. I will not drop serious $$$$$$ on the car, since it has right at 100K and will probably replace it with a 2K5 G35 Coupe as soon as they are available. However, since I drive a lot I need a car that doesn't die on me at every other stop light. Thanx for any help.

rubman - you may not get as much help here on the gen6 board as you would at the gen5 board, as I haven't heard of a gen6 Maxima with a check engine light on. I happen to also have a gen5 SE (bought new July of '99), but have never had the 'check engine' light come on.

Gsilk - It must be that I am living right.
Actually, it is probably a combination of two things:
1. - I have ALL Nissan-recommended maintenance done at the scheduled interval by my Nissan dealer. That maintenance may have included cleaning the injectors, but I'm not sure. I just had the 60,000 mile stuff done (did it early, at 59K). They did a lot of things, and it cost me almost half a G note.
2. - I rotate my driving between two cars and a truck (as well as a farm tractor, two mowers, etc), and only have 59K miles on my '00 Maxima.
I put 206K miles on an '85 Maxima, and I don't remember the check-engine light coming on with it either, although it may have and I have forgotten.
On American-made vehicles, I put in an engine/injector cleaner (there are lots of them on the market; they are simply added to a tank of gas.) every six months or so. Otherwise, they tend to develop 'pinging'.
Sorry I don't have a 'magic potion' or some other easy solution.
