Healights Auto On????

Hi all. When I leave the headlights in the "auto" position they are supposed to turn on automatically, right? In the setup on the display, I have it set at #4, which is supposed to turn on when it is starting to get dark, not when it is dark. Even when it is pouring rain and dark as hell during the day, the headlights will not come on. So tell me, am I just expecting too much or do you folks have the same dilema. If so, what have you done to solve this. I can put a piece of tint over the sensor or something but didnt want to glue something over it. What about coloring it in with a black sharpie marker? ANy thoughts? Thanks.

I have mine set at 5 and it seems to come on pretty well, I was confused at first on whether 1 meant the lights would come on sooner or 5, and figured out it was 5. I still notice though when its overcast and pretty dark, they wont come on, but if its clear and the sun is setting, they'll come on sooner. Guess you should just manually turn them on when you think they should be on.

They do not come on when the wipers are on, as they should since it is law in most states to have lights on during rain. Some users, including myself have taken out the sensors and used a Sharpie to color the inside of the sensor cover. it comes on a little sooner now.

Hope that helps.

I used a sharpie to color the inside of the sensor cover. you just pop up the sensor cover(the one on the driver's side) and color the inside...
mine comes on at perfect time for me, I don't even touch headlight switch now.

side effect: I always forget to turn on or turn off the headlights when i'm in
other cars...

Good idea. I just hate when I go under a tunnel and it keeps turning on and off.

No. Coloring the cover with a marker would make it worse because even less light would reach the sensor.

HID lights do not last long if they come on and off... such as when I leave mine in Auto, they come on when I drive into my garage. I run mine manually.
I wish Nissan would have added a timer to the Auto mode so that when you drive into a garage or through a short tunnel they don't come on.

I did find that kind of odd, my last two cars had auto on lights as well, but they had a delay of about 15 seconds or so. I never had the lights turn on when I pulled into the garage, now they go on when I go under a high way underpass at low speeds.

My 04 is only 3 weeks old, but I have had other years of the Max as a reference point. My most recent would be the 2000 which I ran in manual mode for years without a problem. The headlights would go off instantly when the ignition was off and a door opened.

To my surprise the 04 does not replicate this action and I am still working on how I will deal with this issue. Just leaving it in auto does not work well for me as I take the warning about constant on/off very seriously. My garage is a prime source for this problem.

But I believe manual mode is bad to use constantly also. If it is dark and you go to the manual setting, you must cross through the Auto, that will turn on the headlights, through the parking light setting that will turn them off, and then into manual that will turn them back on! That is doing what they said not to do everytime you use manual.

I believe what is best for me will be to only use manual setting when I must force the headlights to be on in the daylight (construction zone mandate in PA). Otherwise, when I need headlights I will use the auto setting "manually." It is quicker to set and will protect any forgetfulness. When I enter my garage at night, I turn off the headlights manually. That will prevent the on/off problem the next day. How does that sound to you?

Waiting for Nissan

I emailed Nissan about no delay in the auto headlights mode. That their own manual said not to turn HID lights on (or off) unnecessarily. Yet pulling into a garage in broad daylight will turn them on (since there is no delay). I also pointed out the owners manual says you can change sensitivity from 1 to 4 (I believe) but never mentions which is the more sensitive setting.

Nissan said they would get back but no reply yet.

Keep us informed on this one; I wonder how they will justify the error???
Or will they propose some workaround.???

I will post email if I ever hear back from Nissan. They said they would respond within 2-3 days.

Also, I have only 4 sensitivity settings.

Do not worry, you have not gone crazy. I have only 1-4 also, I do not have 5.
