Concerns about modded air intakes..valid??
I really like the look of the replaced air intakes some of you guys have been installing. I also like the thought of a K&N under the hood for its durability, long life and better air flow. They make a heck of a nice product.
But is it just me, or do any of you share some of these concerns?
1. Open air filter, exposed to the elements. I put a K&N into my Mustang, but it went into a covered box, which protected it from all the road sludge, oil splash, winter road salt, etc. I just can't imagine what these open air filters look like after a few thousand miles, especially in tough driving environments. They must be tough to clean and re-charge with filter oil. Would not reach the 50,000 mark before re-charging. Not for me, thanks.....
2. Increased air intake heat, reducing power and driveability. The OEM set-up seems reasonably logical. At the front of the engine bay, drawing cooler, cleaner air from the front of the engine. These modded air intakes would seem to be taking hotter, swirling, dirtier, and less available air from inside the engine bay. I picture your engines gasping for more, cleaner air...
Wouldn't the best set-up be an air injected, swirling intake, with a *covered* K&N, but drawing cooler air from the lower part of the front of the car under the bumper (i.e. ram air)? Does anyone make such a setup for the Max?
Am I missing something?

Currently, Bryan aka cobymoby is developing and may have completed a design on an intake setup for the 6th gens. I believe there is a 6th gen member who has a prototype on his car.

The apexi filter is the #1 in the market. Is a dry-type air filter, so this reduce the chance to blew the MAF and is require zero maintenance. Check this link for a comparo on different filters. http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/fil...t/2/index.html
