auto intake vs stock 6-speed max

So I meet up with this dude with a 6-speed max on 20's. He's not on the org. But his max is looking good. But this is a thread about the intake and its capability. So we decide to rip it around a little bit. I gotta say, those 6-speeds are quick off the line and he's still able to chirp them in 2nd and 3rd. His only performance mod is a panel type K&N filter. and I have the injen intake, modified to a short ram intake due to the fact my cold air extension broke.

Yes it's true, the intake does take away low end power, I'm still able to spin the 20's off the line. But I got smoked off the line by a mostly stock 6-speed. So we get side by side at about 60mph and then punch it. This is where the intake takes control. From 60 to 110 I probably put about 2 car lengths on him. So people that think the intake is worthless, its not, it definetly comes into play at higher speeds. Most likely won't do much for the 1/4 mile times but thumbs up for highway antics.

I have to agree, if you pulled two car lengths on a 04 Max 6MT with your 04 Max auto and all you have is an intake, the other guy started in the wrong gear. 60 mph is a tricky speed to start at...I'm guessing. I don't have a 6MT so I'm not sure, but it's probably a bit too fast to be in 2nd gear, but 3rd may be a bit too tall for quick getaways. I know with my 02 Max, there's "gray" areas where if I floor it, the tranny won't kick down to 2nd and acceleration isn't great.
An intake alone might add a few ponies, but surely not enough to for an auto to pull on a manual if in the correct gear at the correct speed, especially two car lengths.
Next time, if you see him, try it from 40 mph and if he starts in 2nd, I'm sure it will be you who'se back 2 car lengths quite quickly.

at higher speeds, an intake makes sense. more velocity, means an increase in air flow, and an intake has about 2-3X more air flow then a stock box. so higher speeds is where you should see the intake's power. The guy had his shifting on point and was so impressed that the intake had that better high range power and sound that he ordered it that night.
