chassis vibration

Anyone have this issue? Its not the steering wheel vibration but a vibration in the car. When I'm at highway speed (no all the time) I get a vibration in the chassis. When it does it you can watch the passanger seat vibrate. If you had/have this what did nissan do to resolve it.

I would guess your rear tires are out of balance. Getting em balanced would be the first thing I would do...

I had the same problem after the dealer balanced my back tires. I took the car back and they rebalanced them. The tech told me that the machine has a setting to round off the balanced number (ex. 23.4 to 23) and one to balance the tire exactly (ex. 23.4). He rebalanced them exactly and the vibration went away. Definitely have them balance your rear tires.

Agree with other responders this problem is most likely a rear tire/wheel either not balanced correctly, or out of round.

Apparently they did balance them (so they say) no diff. Any other ideas? Out of round tire? Bad belt? But woouldn't these things show up in the balance?

First of all they have to be using the right balance machine. go to this website www.gsp9700.com and find a place in your area that has this hunter vibration balancing machine. they can tell you if your tire is bad and they can also match mount the tire to the wheel for the best possible balancing. this is the only balance machine that I will use for my vehicles. good luck.

04MajesticSE is correct in that may posters here over the past year+ have had tires balanced, but still don't have a smooth ride. It seems the 17 and 18 inch wheel/tire combos sometimes require a much finer tuning than regular balancing machines can perform.

lightonthehill,
You are absolutely correct about the larger tire/wheel combos on todays vehicles. I have been dealing with it for many years now. I had 20's on my 2000 Lightning and that was when I found out about the Hunter gsp9700. what is great about this machine is that it can tell you if you wheel is running true, it will tell you if the tire is out of round or not. also it will match the tires low spot with the wheel to get the lowest rolling resistance on the road. its worth getting any wheel/tire 17" or larger done on this machine. another problem area is the tires from the car company's. sometimes these tires come in out of round and cause big headaches for the car owner. this is where the Hunter machine will help.

Something sounds fishy over there. I would get a hold of the service manager of that Nissan dealer and raise some hell. this Hunter machine gives a printout every time it does a balance job. ask him for the printout that was done on your car or have them do the balance again and tell them you want to see the printout to verify the balance results. I do not go to any dealers when I have the Hunter wheel balancing done. the place I go to lets you stand there and watch them as they do the balancing. hope this helps.

Just spoke with Nissan Corp. They told me that the dealership should not try to balance the tires since it is not the fix (per Nissan not the dealership). WTF? Anyway the girl at Nissan said that the is a TSB being drafted and to call her in 3 week to see if it is out. Why the F do I have to keep checking on this? Put me in the system to call when it is released. I am going to talk to the dealership and ask them to bal the tires.

Looks like the new TSB for the shimmy that has a thread here is recommending to use the Hunter GSP 9700 to balance the wheels/tires but more importantly it can tell you if the tire is out of round and that its bad. Goodyear is notorious for having out of round tires and that could be alot of the problem. when you have the wheel and tire done on the GSP9700 machine they will take the road force measurements and try to get them as low as possible. Example would be if you come out with a roadforce measurement of say 25 which is high they would proceed to matchmount the wheel and tire. what matchmounting does is find the low spots of both the wheel and tire then matches them up by rotating the tire to that spot on the wheel. when they do the roadforce measurement again it might come down to say 8-10 and that would be good. If it stays at 25 after the matchmount then the tire is out of round and should be replaced. I have done this many times on some of my vehicles and it works well in getting rid of vibrations and shimmy's. hope this helps.
