My Maxima Is Gone

Well yesterday my father was driving us home from a vacation when all the sudden he starts swirving and we fall down into a ditch like 30ft down. Then all I remember is a big bang and climbing out of the car. My seat belt most likley saved my life I have bruises from the belt going down my chest. The landed on its side. If you look at the car you wouldnt believe anyone survived. My mom is a big bruise on her back and I shreded up my foot from stepping on the skyview trying to climbout. My mom had to be taken out with the jaws of life. My sister had a lil bruise on her elbow and my father has nothing. I would like to post some pictures of the car but I don't know where.

That must have been really scary, especially when they had to cut your Mom out. I would have been so nervous. You all were very lucky.

So do you know what happened? Did your dad hit something in the road, or have a blowout or get hit by another car or what?

Glad you're in the survivor's column!

So how long to get the repairs done? Looks like it needs a bit of bondo, and some touch up paint.

Glad to hear nobody is seriously hurt.

I dunno what actually happened because I woke up when the car was swirving and my dad doesn't know what happened himself. The car seems like its unrepairable. The insurance company is going to go look at the car sometime tommorow or Saturday. Also in reponse to another post I was in the ambulance and couldn't see what was happening with my mom since they had me strapped in that bed and I couldn't move I was so scared for my mom because I smelt smoke in the car, it was most likley the air bags. I also remember hiting my head on the head curtain airbags. I think if we were in the 4th Gen Maxima I don't think I would be posting here right now.

that's one of the scary things that happen when air bags deploy...you think it's smoke! But they certainly do their job!

Well, I'm happy to hear no one is seriously hurt. Hope insurance works out well. You'll have to get your dad to tell what happened. Did you have VDC? Kinda wish I did. Can you keep any salvageable parts to sell or save for next one?

These things help open eyes to what's important.

Wow! This car will be totaled. The airbags alone cost around $2,000 each to replace, and, IIRC, there are eight in the '04 Maxima. That's $16,000 right there.

The clincher is that the damage is all around the car. When it reaches the point of replacing the top and repairing major damage on both sides and the front is pushed way in, it could easily cost well over $30,000 (probably more) to make this car like new. And, in truth, it would still not be anywhere 'like new'.

This may have been one of those situations where the VDC package might have made the difference. That would depend, of course, on the exact situation involved here.

Just be glad this car will be totaled. There are few repair folks anywhere who could fix this type damage in an acceptable manner.

And be especially glad nobody was hurt any worse than they were. There was much less damage than this on Dale Earnhart's car.

So the airbags cost half the price of the car?

and you wonder why they steal the airbags and leave the rest of
the car intact!

Depends. The airbags are on several different control sensors. Most frontal impacts won't set off the side airbags or the head curtains. Some side impacts may not set off the front bags. In this case, it looks like most, if not all, the bags were triggered.

And yes, if they all deployed, the cost could be somewhere around half the value of the car. This has become a very serious consideration for insurance companies. A fairly minor frontal collision that may cause hindreds of dollars damage to the bumper could cost thousands to replace the airbags.

And while we are talking about this situation, it is interesting that the pre-tensor seat belts on the Maxima, which deploy in hard frontal crashes, are 'one-incident' units. Once one is tripped in an accident, the entire seat belt assembly, including that belt's pre-tensor unit, must be replaced.

Prices on these safety devices are very high at this time, but should eventually drop somewhat, as research and development costs are recovered. But then there will be newew and better (and more expensive) devices. The cycle is unending.

nothing a little buffing out can't fix, eh?

seriously tho, i'm glad to hear that everyone made it out all right... and you'll probably be getting a new car after the insurance company totals this car.

if you have anything that can be salvaged, let us know. hope your family makes a speedy recovery!
