Your Welcome.... You sound so happy it was fixed. Mine was fixed too, the steering is alittle stiff but no shimmy. Great dealership, they'll fix anything that's wrong with the Maxima. My next project will be to replace the struts since the 05 are out now. Also would like to replace the interior with all the scratches near the shifter. Maybe they can replace with the 05 interior, I heard it's different and doesn't scratch. All under warrenty I hope.. Basically, I would like to replace what I can from the 05. Keep you posted.

Well, I just got my car back from DCH freehold nissan which I drove over an hour to. They replaced 1 rim that they said was out of round, did the road force and rack adjustment. This dealer is EXCELLENT, best customer service ever. Only problem is was that my tires are bad so I still get somewhat of a shimmy, but not really noticible. Walt tried to get me the tires under warrenty, but you know how that goes. Anybody who has an 04 should get their rack adjusted because the car drives like a new beast. No more steering shimmy, steering jumping out of your hands etc. Very tight ride.

Glad to hear it 98MAXSE. They do have great customer service, sometimes I wonder why he/they are so nice there. Do they need the business, who knows. It does drive like a beast. I noticed that I'm driving alot faster now that the steering doesn't shake.

About getting the brushed aluminum scratch resistant interior trim from the 05, we can probably get it under warrenty. I'm going to try. I'll talk to Walt from Freehold, maybe with an oil change and I'll order other parts from the dealership like a wing and sunroof wind visor, he can try to get the stuff under warrenty.

Be careful when you order the parts - the console piece under the shift lever has an extra hole that the '04's don't have - you may need to order extra parts if you intend to fill the hole with an added 12V access point.

I just got my 04 Maxima SL and it shimmys when I am slowing down from 30 mph and when I am driving between 55-65 without hitting the break. Talked to the dealer and was told the car was on his lot for 9 months before I bought it. He thinks its the rotors? Do you guys think it might be since the car was sitting on the lot for 9 months that the tires are warped??

Have the dealer do the TSB - if they can't because they don't have the balancer then have them take the car to a dealer that does - should all be under warranty to fix it...

I assume you mean rotors, not tires. My opinion: NO.

Yes. Spoke to the dealer he said he probably has to cut the rotors a little bit since my car was on the lot for 9 months. Thoughts?

Just sitting wouldn't warp the rotors. Unless there is heavy rust buildup, they shouldn't need to be resurfaced.

They said they probably have rust buildup that is why.

Any word on what vehicles were effected by this? Just bought an 04 SL built in June. No shimmey yet wondering if my car was built after they caught it or if I'm in for trouble down the road??

when the shimmy gets fixed, only thing that sucked was the stiff steering..... but dont be confused. the shimmy ends up returning after awhile. its the steering damper which is soon to have a recall to install a better one. leaves the steering normal but NO MORE SHIMMY issues.

So, if remounting the tires using the new $9,000 machine that Nissan apparently makes each dealer purchase (according to my dealer) doesn't work, Nissan may really have a revolt on their hands.

Hey guys..

I'm a customer of DCH Freehold Nissan myself. They have generally given me great service. Walt Burton has helped me quite a bit so far. If anyone else is dealing with him/this dealership and manages to get some of the problems fixed with their 04s there, would you guys mind giving me a shout? I've had the car back there now many times for the shimmy. I still have a shimmy/vibration in the car, but I suspect it's something other than the steering rack adjustment, which was done by DCH already. They have also replaced the front rotors too.

As for interiors, I get mine scratched up too. If anyone has any luck getting these parts replaced with 05 equipment under warranty, let me know! :-)

Have any of you had problems with the sunroof making kind of a scraping noise/creaking noise when you are driving, particularly when hitting bumps?

many thanks in advance!!!

Your sunroof noises could be the headliner hitting the strucural supports in the roof - have a listen and see if that is where the noises are coming from - was on mine.

thanks 04SE... that might be it on the sunroof
it seems to not be as bad when the shade is closed

I still have shimmy problems with this thing. I am considering sending a lemon law letter to Nissan at this point. I'll try to keep you guys posted if I file it and anything happens.

I've taken my car to the dealer 8 times, i've gone to 3 different dealers (i travel alot) in 2 states and i have gotten EVERY excuse from bad tires (which i replaced) to bad rims (which they ALLEGEDLY replaced) and the problem has NOT gone away. My problem is that i noticed the problem at 20K miles which is 2K over the lemon law limit. I want this problem fixed (most likely) OR i want to sue the hell out of nissan(which wouldnt fix my problem but would at least give me some peace) and possibly get my car traded in or purchsed by nissan. Either way i think I need a lawyer. anyone have any good recommendations for a good lemon law or 'breach of warranty' lawyer in the NJ area?

you can email me at akv5@cornell.edu ... just put lemon lawyer in the subject line so i know its not spam . Thnx for the help/advice.

i guess dealers are known to give excuses and blame it on the drivers habit.

I think you can find some goodyear tire dealers with hunter GSP 9700. Dealers here do it for $30- $40 for all wheels and guarantee for 12months/12k miles. Well, you can go back again if you get shimmy back or until its gone.

lemon law letter sent

Hey guys

I finally got to the point where I sent Nissan a last chance letter referencing the NJ Lemon Law. After giving them four opportunities to fix my car's shimmy issue, to no avail, I've had it and decided to go this route to see if this can be resolved.

I'll try to let you all know if anything comes of it.

anyone know if two bad struts could be the cause of the shimmy? Any opinions on this?

tangalos,
I would really like to know the result of your situation. What was in your letter to Nissan? I am about to draft one here, of course NJ law might be different than WA. But I would like to see what you included in the letter. Thanks!

When I first bought my Maxima the shimmy was pretty bad. I've put about 2500 miles on it now and the shimmy has almost completely gone away. Has anyone else had their shimmy go away over time?

What fixed my shimmy was careful tire mounting (so they were centered properly on the wheels) and balancing. It has not returned after 7000 miles.

I just had the TSB done on my MAX. The steering a a bit stiffer, and the shimmy is not as bad. But... it will still shimmy. I hope the rumor about the new damper is true, because this is really annoying. I definitely don't want my steering any stiffer than it is now.

I tried calling Walt with no joy, left my numbers. Would you care to share what fixed it for you, I had the balance/force and rack adjustment done and it's worse!

Lemon law letter filed. I had a quick response, once the correct address was used for the letter. If any of you send a letter in, make sure the address is right. The one Nissan listed in the booklet which came with the car was not correct in my case. I had to contact my State's Division of Consumer Affairs, Lemon Law Unit, to get the right address. I got a pretty rapid response from the dealer (no one at Nissan Corp. has contacted me directly though). So far the response in this last chance repair attempt has been a rim replacement and they claim the tires had flat spots. The dealer is making arrangements to replace all 4 tires with a set of Michelins for me. Let's see what happens.

I have been working with Nissan Consumer Affairs for mine which I sent it certified return receipt. NJ law states they have 10 business days from the time the letter is postmarked. Nissan is so laid back with this situation seems as if they dont care if they have to swap the car for a new one. I did contact 800lemonlaw and working with them,
